Actually Ihsahn's solo work has been consistently better than his work with Emperor. Also, this is his WORST solo LP. By far. Still a great album, but pales in comparison to the amazing The Adversary and Angl, which was my favorite album of 2008.

I am going to have to respectively disagree with you. The songwriting on this album is his best, in my opinion. The addition of the saxophone was a really great choice. It has the melodies, the hooks, and it just sounds huge. Plus, his clean singing is outstanding on this.

sorry, but no.

The Adversary was all over the place and AngL sounded almost entirely lazy and uninspired with the exception of Unhealer.

The Adversary isn't all over the place and Angl sounds ABSOLUTELY awesome. Unhealer isn't even the best song. Scarab and Threnody are the best songs.

Love this album and really want to get his other two solo albums, BUT! and there is a but. In the Nightside Eclipse is still untouchable. Every artist has to progress otherwise things would get boring but that first emperor LP is stupidly amazing.

His first two are unspectacular and inconsistent but he really nailed it with this one.

the first is the best, definitely.

after is the worst, definitely, but that's not saying much. it's still great. it's just not as great as the other two.

also, why would you trust the opinion of someone named after two of the worst metal bands of all time?

Go out and buy the album, fuck streaming!

Ihsahn is one of the few that still remains fresh in his craft and doesn't have any plans of slowing down. There's many bands that release a good album, then another, and after their 3rd or 4th release they seem to loose that energy, and just make mediocre albums here and there, Ihsahn on the other hand, understands where he wants to go with his music and doesn't let bullshit labels or genres get in the way of what kind of music he wants to create.
