I'll take Bergtatt over this. Sadly, Emperor lost it's way with me into the forgotten abyss. Everyone should check out Iskald's new album for some tight melo/black.

I've heard that is one of their worse albums available so I didn't bother acquiring the album. I still need to but I'm confident it's not going to be as big as Bergtatt. As for my favorite b.m album, it's gotta be Blood Fire Death. Nothing more, nothing less.

They are morons!

Check it out indeed, but take fair warning; expect a really mellow, trippy kind of an album.

Perdition City is better than Blood Inside and on par with Shadows of the Sun, if not better. And to compare it to Bergtatt is kinda pointless, two very different albums.

That being said, I think Perdition City is one of the best in Ulver's discography. So yes Balls, like the_wizard said, definitely check it out. It IS kinda mellow and trip-hop-ish but it has that dark undercurrent and melancholy that is found in their previous black metal/neo-folk trilogy (at least to me).

^ You're welcome. But it isn't that hard to see when you got songs as "Lost in Moments", "Future Sound of Music" [!] and "Nowhere/Catastrophe".

On topic, what are your favorite tracks off this?

Hyme' VI, VII, VIII. They closed this album with a bang, saving the best riffs and all the best atmospheric moments for last.

Interesting. The last few tracks are really starting to grow on me atm. But I'd still say Hymns I, III, IV are major standouts, as well as VI.

I love when you hear the guitars plugging into their speakers. Awesome touch to the beginnings of a few songs.

Agreed, gotta love the buzzsaw haha. Especially the intro solo in the first song.

Jezz that solo is hard on the ears (especially with headphones) hahaha. It took me at least 10 tries before I could get through the buzzsaw drone. Quite frankly now, I kind of enjoy that extra element of rawness that it adds to the atmosphere on this album.

I think it is this element that draws me to the album, along with Garm's performance, the riffs/melodies and the atmosphere of course. I also love the smooth basslines beneath the wall of sound.

I wonder how ridiculous this album would sound with good production.

You're probably right. I know that it would probably be nowhere near a classic.

best part of this is the raw vocals. some of the songs are just drawn out and kinda same-y to my ears. i like kveldssanger and bergtatt better.

it's too similar to most other norwegian black metal, really

Structurally speaking it's basically the same as transilvanian hunger for the most part, and the melodies are alot like nemesis divina era satyricon. It's still a good piece of work though.
