If a friend of mine asked "what is black metal?" then this is easily the one i would show him.

This album is really good, but they've done A LOT better.

It's definitely one of the best, that's for sure.

Dude you only gave it a 2.5 and you think it's really good?

Sorry, I gave it that score a while ago back when I didn't like Ulver at all, but I just corrected it now.

If you wanted to completely turn them off of the genre, then yeah, this is the album to show them. Remember, you have to ease people in to completely new genres they're totally unfamiliar with, not put on one of the least accessible and poorly produced records.

Technically that's true, but if you want one of the best examples of black metal then you can't go wrong with this album. I hated this at first, but once I got deeper into the genre I realized how great it was. This album has some of the best riffs ever to be played on a black metal album IMO.

This is easily in Ulver's top 3 records, all genres included.

Also, the greatest albums often turn out to be the least accessible ones. This album is a perfect example of that.

You're so right. The riffs are amazing. Most people don't care to listen for them though because of the production. This is a lot harder to get into than Bergtatt, but it's really close to being as good.

This and Bergtatt blow everything else they've done completely out of the water.

Yeah, I agree with you Hawks, but when I'm trying to broaden my friends' musical preferences then I would ease them into the genre with something that I'd likely find less enjoyable, but they'd like. I've tried to force things like this on people, and it NEVER works.

I would definitely put Perdition City after this and Bergtatt. Easily their best non-black metal album IMO

Newcomers to the genre will be turned off by the production 99% of the time. But once you get more into black metal, you actually realize there's shit with a lot worse production than this, like Forest Poetry by Ildjarn or Paysage d'Hiver's demos.

For me Shadows of the Sun is better than Perdition City, which I would probably put in between Bergtatt and this.

Shadows of the Sun is also really good and so is Blood Inside and, like I said, Perdition City. Don't care for any of the other non-black metal albums by this band.

paysage d'hiver has amazing production

Well yeah for someone who's already into black metal. I'm just saying if a newcomer would just pick up a Paysage d'Hiver album and listen to it they're gonna get turned off.
