Badmotor has three or four untouchable classic songs on there



Down on the Upside, for all it's tasteful experimentation and mostly consistent writing...has no untouchable classic songs.

there are three or four songs on badmotorfinger that i dig more than arguably any other soundgarden song (slaves and bulldozers, jesus christ pose, searching w my good eye closed and room a thousand years wide) but the rest of it is a clear step below dotw and superunknown imo. some songs on badmotorfinger i outright skip. dotw prob their best and most consistent

I'd find it more of a slog to start to finish listen to 'Upside' than 'Badmotor' myself, but to each their own



I'd also say 'Superunknown' has about ten songs I prefer to ANY song on 'Upside' - hard to even name a best song on it? I rate 'Zero Chance', 'Blow Up the Outside World' and 'Applebite' the best...but other than the very strange 'Applebite' I also feel the other two songs are bettered by very similar songs on 'Superunknown' too (does 'Outside World' need to exist with 'Day I Tried to Live' sitting there? Not sure)

Tighter & Tighter is my favorite song by Soundgarden overall so it’d disagree about the lack of classic tracks, but Pretty Noose and Blow Up were great singles

the highlights on this and upside are about even for me and upside gets bonus points for not having kickstand and half



pretty noose, zero chance, dusty, blow up the outside world, applebite, tighter and tighter, a switch opens, overfloater, boot camp, etc are all huge tunes. also i def think blow up has enough identity to stand as its own song bc its dynamics are a bit more exaggerated

Pretty Noose I like but is also somewhat underwhelming and feels a bit 'Cornell solo' type of a composition/sentiment.



Blow Up is the Beatles'y remake of 'The Day I Tried to Live' - it's ok, it's what you'd have predicted Soundgarden would make next after 'Superunknown'



'Tighter & Tighter' is a bit Temple of the Dog, the end of the track is great, not sure overall I'm as in love with the start, it's good though.



I do like the Eastern elements of 'Downside' a lot but never been sure the whole album hangs together, definitely six songs I'd rate only average or 'Superunknown' retread'y.

As much as I completely went all in with the whole grunge thing from 92-94 this band were the one that didn’t have the antipathy of Nirvana, the unshackled rock of PJ the alternative vibes of Pumpkins. They didn’t permeate my life half as much as those other bands did.

'Kickstand' I wouldn't necessarily rate lower than 'Rhinosaur', 'Ty Cobb', 'An Unkind' or 'Never Named' tbh - I'll stick my neck out and declare 'Kickstand' A LOT better than 'An Unkind' and 'Never Named'!



I much prefer 'Superunknown' t/t and 'Spoonman' to all the above songs though.

ya i dig all the songs you rate lowly on upside lol and even dig a bunch of them more than spoonman (whips but hasnt aged as well as the rest of this at all for me). we have diff favs on superunknown tho anyway mailman clears this whole thing for me
