most stuff i know of is more of a combo of emo and -core than "depression-core". i mean i just originated that as an idea because it seems like an interesting concept. dont think its an actual thing. having said that, misery signals def isnt emo

It IS an interesting idea, I just can't believe I can't think of legit examples or if its actually a thing at all. I even looked up on reddit and its fairly banal choices like certain architects and earlier bmth songs. I don't think so

knut - challenger is the closest i can think of. the reason i thought of it is cause it's the closest thing to a genre i can think of for the music i write. but please god lets not try to popularize that term. more of a joke than anything

I can kinda see that, but a lot of 90s metalcore kinda gives me that vibe. I was thinking something a bit more modern. Idk maybe metalcore really was better in the 90s lol. Converge still kinda carry that torch but they're so big they kinda usurp the label.

“OK this is true from that macro-perspective, the whole thing is inundated. Respect your views even if I can't take that perspective.”

Within that sentiment I do think certain genres are more particularly prone to having an excess of bad stuff based off of numerous factors. You won’t agree but I do unfortunately think metal is one of them, and the reason for that is because it’s a gateway genre for a lot of new musicians. A lot of these genres attract a young demographic, so these teenagers and young adults go on to make metal and punk bands without much experience and of course a lot of it is crap. Other genres this happens with are things like ambient, because that’s another gateway genre, but into producing. A lot of aspiring electronic artists start with ambient because it’s “easy” and they churn out some really vapid stuff. That doesn’t mean the great in those genres is any less great, it just means the genres are a bit more diluted by the accessibility of music and recording in this age. Alternatively, genres like jazz don’t suffer this quite as much because not many people without knowledge in music theory have the audacity to say “I’m going to start a jazz trio” lol. They couldn’t if they tried.

DIY genres just inherently suffer this the worst. Unfortunately, these days most genres can be DIY, but not so long ago your music just wasn’t going to happen if it was terrible because no one would want to help you bring it to fruition. The low bar for accessibility to recording equipment and production technology just wasn’t there.

"You won’t agree"

No, actually, I agree. I've been a fan of metal/dug through databases and new releases enough to know how dire it gets. And I got to a ton of shows that definitely put on that same stuff, and it's almost always for the pure adrenaline rush/underground fun time, so I can't say it's entirely devoid of appeal. But does it inevitably flood the scene and drown out potentially promising talent? Absolutely.

Really this just boiled down to me seeing more in modern metal than you, otherwise I side with everything else you're saying.

What’s Potsy’s saying will absolutely be true I imagine, but honestly I manage to avoid all that stuff pretty easily because I probably don’t dig in the ‘wrong’ areas, so I don’t get to experience the vast sea of substandard metal

not saying a lot of it isn’t underwhelming - even some Sput faves, lol, but most of is at least vaguely competent (not BAD necessarily, just doesn’t always interest me)

Also yeah CHECK ZAPRUDER

What are some artists that you see as “the future of metal” mars?

“OSDM saxophones”

This is exactly the problem with innovation in metal. Most metal genres revolve around a gimmick to begin with, so as soon as they do something like this, it’s even more gimmicky and it just instantly becomes kitsch.

I think there are plenty of people that legitimately believe it but it always comes off as gatekeeping bs to me. The actual music doesn't matter so much as what you get from it all accounting to taste. Pots said he finds this band too wanky and I can get where he's coming from but it doesn't feel that way to me, especially when I saw them live. It's just fun.
