I've always wanted to get into Deftones, just was unsure if I'd like 'em. Any similar bands you'd care to mention that compare?
And btw nu-metal...hmmm kind makes me want to turn my back on this, but everywhere I see or read about this album its glorified.

dude don't let the nu-metal influence anything, they only have one nu-metally song(Back To School) and it can be easily ignored.
Get White Pony and Saturday Night Wrist, easily two of the best albums I've ever heard. I don't have a band that really sounds like Deftones that I could tell you, but maybe that speaks to how original they are.

supposedly this album is what made nu-metal popular...but in that case the genre only went downhill from here.
as for similar bands: vocals are pretty one-of-a-kind, but musically similar bands would be older Chevelle, A Perfect Circle, some System Of A Down, and some elements of bands like Glassjaw and Tool.

Their sound is rather hard to pin down though, Derek's right. He's also right about those other 2 albums, they're both better than this one.

I'd rec this first before embarking on the trips that are WP and SNW as they throw a lot more atmospherics into the mix (which are great) but might not be your thing.
And there first album (Adrenaline) is nu metal, but good.

Deftones honestly havent released an album that has completely sucked yet, which is quire rare I would think. I enjoy everything by them. And yes, that is true, they have such an original sound that its hard to find A band that can compare to their sound.
