A real stinker of a review from Mike Stagno IMO.
For PJ fans and musicians who know a lot more than Mike ever will I find Backspacer not as nearly as great as the last self titled one, or Riot Act, or Binaural. All of those are amongst the best work PJ has ever done IMO.
There's nothing much new or different about Backspacer. It's a very good hard rock CD. Just not as great as many past efforts IMO, particularly Binaural.
And I'm still laughing at Mike's comment about PJ's heavier songs being a parody of themselves..... ah hello.... they're a heavy rock band. You might look up "parody" in a dictionary while you consider what a heavy rock band is - hehehe

Agree with Waxhead, way to many people just say what the mainstream says: After Ten it was never that good again, hell no, please get yourself an opinion of your own.
TOTD, No Code, Vs, Binaural, Riot act and probably the avocado album were all better than Ten.
and for sure the heavier songs on the avocado album were very, very good, especially Severed hand.

it is my opinion that Ten is their best album. It would be dishonest of me if I said otherwise

This album is one of Pearl Jam's best, I personally think it's better than Ten, and I love Ten.

Okay album. No really big songs on it. But most of the uneven numbered songs is quite allright.

All you "Ten only" fans can f*ck off, this is a rock solid album from my favorite band. Obvisiouly you "fans," are better off with Lady Gaga music than listening to real music made for people with actual taste.

A rock solid album that you gave 2.5 out of 5?
What a fucking moron.

I had no clue "Just Breathe" was from this album.
My cousin (whom I did not know too well; he was 13 years older) died from a drug OD a few weeks ago, and at his service they played the song. It was really touching.

While I don't find this album as great as their earlier works, I'd say it's quite intriguing. Their new direction definitely makes the album more accessible. I think 'Amongst the Waves', 'Got Some' and 'Speed of Sound' are good examples of that. Especially 'Amongst the Waves' has a chorus that's easy to love, and it's haunting as hell. I very much appreciate this album, however, Binaural and Vitalogy still stands as my all-time favorites.

Pearl Jam has a lot of very good albums.

Great review! I really enjoy this album, especially from "Just Breath" and 'till The End (lolz). So yeah, the more relaxed part of the album. Can't wait to see them next summer, when they're finally returning to Denmark.
