after listening to the whole album a couple times, i must admit, it's not average. but that doesn't mean it's not overrated. 3.5 for now, i could MAYBE see bumping it to a 4

same thing happened to me with Neutral Milk Hotel.
as soon as you've learned the lyrics to it, Reinventing Axl Rose is an unstoppable force.

Or a show. Against Me!'s shows are beyond epic. Well, they used to be. Before The Album That Shall Not Be Named.

I like half of New Wave, and they still play a hefty amount of older stuff.

his blistering howls soar on the power of his (at the time) deep rooted convictions.
Sigh. Those were the good ole' days. Fantastic review (read it again). Would love to see the long-winded pile of bullshit 'bout the state of punk today and how this album is its shining moment, too. Would probs agree with a lot of it lol.
And I like some of the songs on New Wave without any context. If I had never heard of Against Me! or listened to any of their older stuff or heard Tom Gable scream his lungs out to songs that he truly believed in, then I would have probably liked the album a lot. But, in that context... Kinda killed me a little inside. Against Me! was my first TRUE music love. My first band obsession, if you will. New Wave kind of ruined all of that for me. It just seems like he doesn't put the same passion into what he writes anymore.

As The Eternal Cowboy lost most of this albums passion, I haven't listened past that album, but I can imagine there was even less energy.

The second half of Searching for a Former Clarity was great. like really fucking great.

Ya I love Searching for a Former Clarity, the only Against Me! album I'd skip is New Wave and it's not even half as bad as most make it out to be, it's still enjoyable for what it is, out of context of what Against Me have done in the past

I'm gonna agree with tom79 and say that this might be the best album ever

"Against Me!'s shows are beyond epic. Well, they used to be. Before The Album That Shall Not Be Named" Talking about "New Wave?"
I think I have seen this band live at least 5 times and the last time I saw them, they absolutely sucked. Like someone mentioned before, they still play a lot of old songs, but then about the 2nd half of their show they started playing all these songs from New Wave and a couple of their "girly" songs from "...Clarity." I knew the songs were girly because the women in the audience went crazy after listening to them, turning The Riv into a Jonas Bros. concert. One of the worst show experiences I've been a part of. After that show, I never looked at or listened to this band the same way as I did before. Very sad.......

yeah dude, girls dont listen to punk rock, they mustve strayed from a nearby beyonce concert or something!

No, girls listen to punk rock. I rather have women listening to punk rock, than to Jonas Bros or Brittney Spears, but I guess the point I was making was that the last show I saw Against Me didn't feel like a punk show, but like a generic rock show to appeal to a wider audience. The first four shows I saw them play in were one of the happiest musical experiences in my life. The 5th and final time, it felt like I was saying goodbye to Against Me! and passing the band to a more forgiving audience as the band was ready to take the next step to attain commercial success.
Although, I think there might've been a Beyonce show in Chicago that same night.... I don't remember, but I think my gf went to a concert herself that same night.

still... WHAT ARE THE CHICK SONGS?!?!?!?
