the songwriting on this album is flawless for me, and there's so much variety too.

I would say that all my top 10 Thrice songs are on this album, but that wouldn't be fair to the Whaler. But it's pretty damn close

It definitely has some of their absolute best songs. Also Fire & Water is my other favorite from them so great pick with The Whaler as well. What's your favorite off of this Rowan. I can't decide between Circles, Wood and Wire, or Beggars.

Circles and the Great Exchange have been head-to-head for about 5 years for me but t/t runs them close

The guitar in Circles is ridiculously good

also the drumming on this entire album is on another level holy shit

Also, 64 pages in, can we all take a moment to appreciate how excellent this review is? I disagree slightly with its central thesis ("They are generally awesome ideas that have the sad fate of being leftovers - little fossils of what makes Thrice the great band they are" - to me, this is a convincingly mature, concise construction on the foundation they laid down with Vheissu and the Indexes) but stuff this insightful, thoroughly analytic and compellingly argued rarely comes up nowadays.

Yeah I second that, this is a phenomenal review even if I disagree
