1. What They Call Us - 3.5/5. As Doc succinctly put it, a context-bound track. Great opener, but average Fever Ray / The Knife song. That’s ok because average for them is still great for anyone else and it sets a familiar tone.
2. Shiver - 4.5/5. Incredible. No notes.
3. New Utensils - 5/5. Wild even by The Knife standards. Just absolutely mind melting track. So good it hurts my feelings. Top 5 Fever Ray song material.
4. Kandy - 5/5. Perfect in a very different way than New Utensils. Familiar like the opener but instead of middling this is a Knife/Fever Ray GOATer. Pass This On 2023. Probably will be song of the year. This one also hurts my feelings.
5. Even It Out - 4/5. Weird song. If it’s weird for Fever Ray/The Knife then you know it’s really weird. Trent’s input is very apparent and it makes it sound like a NiN track featuring Karin. It’s been a while since we’ve heard guitar on a Fever/Knife track and the industrial and post punk influences kind of make it feel a bit at odds with the rest of the album. It keeps growing though regardless.
6. Looking For a Ghost - 2.5. This is Self Titled / Deep Cuts era The Knife quality. Problem is the bar is too high for this shit now. Song is derpy as fuck and I can’t make myself like it. If it was on either of those early albums I would probably see it differently, but here it is not the one.
7. Carbon Dioxide - 3.5/5. Radical Romantic’s To the Moon and Back. Except not as good. Still really good but as the singular song here that really stands out as a Plunge-era cut, it’s just not as exciting as stuff that sounds new, or sounds like a welcome throwback to The Knife.
8. North - 3/5. Also context-bound imo. It’s a nice atmospheric song that works in the albums favour. Trent’s input is extremely evident here as well but it’s less jarring. A good “intermission” or moment of release of tension.
9. Tapping Fingers - 4/5. I could see this one growing to a 4.5 pretty quick. It’s not as immediate as shiver or new utensils but it just gets better every time I hear it. Benefits from Norths “cooldown” making the climactic peak even more satisfactory. It’s the true “ending” of the album to me. I love it.
10. Bottom of the Ocean - 3.5/5. A quintessentially “The Knife” outro. It’s a good meditation on the rest of the album. It serves its purpose and doesn’t need to be anything more than it is. Context-bound once again. Bookend choices here were very thought out and make the album come together as a whole very nicely.
Final rating: 10/5

Man this thread got my reminiscing of the Mezz days…
Really really excited to check this new record out from the sounds of it
|
| |
That’s a very topical thing to bring up because I don’t blame a single person who may still have a grudge against me from the mezz days that’s my own fault 1000%

Ghost is in last place for me too. I like the opener, although agreed that the context of its placement helps massively. The closer is just kind of 'there' but yeah, fine again due to placement as an outro - bit overlong mind.
Even It Out is ALMOST up there with Shiver / Kandy for me, loved if for spicing things up a little with something somewhat unexpected... definitely the best album stretch.

Some defunct Sput Clique that isn't Casual Convo Crew
Despite being named after Massive Attack's Mezzanine, most of them don't even like it and are like metalheads?

The melody’s on Looking For a Ghost sound like something I would have made on my Maschine when I was like 17 just dinking around with a midi keyboard, it’s so fucking bad

Pft you call me a cistard for saying I’m not big on the opener and here you are calling a track so fucking bad smh. I do agree tho that it’s not amazing, which is a shame because I like pretty much everything else about that track
