I feel as though this album succeeds as a collection of interesting riffs, but it fails when it comes to using those ideas to build coherent songs. The whole thing is just a mess.

Ehhhhhh I mean that and Follow the Reaper are the best Children of Bodom for sure but like...nah, man. Imo Kalmah writes actual music instead of just wankery nonsense, while also creating an atmosphere that isn't the cheesiest fucking thing on the planet which is crazy because they named their own genre "swamp metal" lol

its not even their own genre, its just standard melodeath with every other song title having the word swamp in it lol

also Black Waltz is their best and better than all their swamp themed albums tbh

and cmon, actual music? the best thing about early bodom was that they didnt take themselves seriously (they still dont from what i can tell). doesnt matter if its wankery if the shit's fun as hell

also Hatebreeder has a hell of an atmosphere idk what ur talking about

Yeah Kalmah calling themselves their own genre is goofy. It's just really good Finnish style melodeaf. But no first 2 albums > the rest, they don't have an album below a 4 for me though.

Yeah, I guess it can be fun but someone should tell their hardcore fans that who seem to think they are the best melodeath metal band on the planet. I dunno, they're fine but there is just so much better shit out there and they are obnoxiously popular within the genre to be as middle of the road as they are imo

"also Hatebreeder has a hell of an atmosphere idk what ur talking about"

Kinda...not really compared to Kalmah and many other melodeath metal bands, though.

imo

look at every popular artist in any given genre and that's the case, children of bodom are just accessible

There's WAY better melodeath bands than Bodom, including Kalmah. There just aren't very many better melodeath records than Hatebreeder and FTR.

also i'd say that album has more atmosphere than the vast majority of melodeath that focuses more on melody than atmosphere

kalmah is better, if COB had stayed in the same vein as Something Wild then they would be equal, but COB is WAY more fun.

Damn, I thought I liked fun. I listen to Steel Panther, early Ensiferum and other stuff but I dunno, CoB isn't really my jam :-/

Follow the Reaper and Hatebreeder are good but tbh I don't even love those albums anymore.
