Mop bucket Cave at far from his finest tbh - No More Shall We Part was a healthy raise on this

No More Shall We Part might be my favourite of the lot

Think I underrated that one in my initial Bad Seeds phase as it was one of his more mature and I was all about the Henry's Dream/Let Love In/Tender Prey/Abattoir Blues thunder, but those first 5-6 songs might be his finest run at least (and maybe his best closer too?)

Has an absolutely brutal third-quarter falloff looking at the tracklist, but time for a reappraisal perhaps

Well, one thing I will say is I'm not the best with his early material, just haven't fully bonded with it yet - prob too theatric for my tastes when I first encountered it...whether I'd be happier with it now I don't know. There's a small chance I'd find an album I prefer there I guess. 'Skeleton Tree' is excellent too of course - but not quite perfection imo.

Still been slacking on most of his 80s run - found that emaciated blues fuckage a tough sell back in the day, but maybe it'll land better now. Skeleton Tree's opening and closing sections are impeccable, just has a somewhat ponderous midway lacuna - close enough to perfect I guess

Yeah it’s very close - as close to a 5 as a 4.5 rating can get for me (a 94% on my AOTY account!)

I rate it higher than ‘Blackstar’ for one thing which I guess is a big statement :/

Probably remains his most underwhelming record for. No colour. Eternally grey / dreary (and I love Skeleton Tree, lol)

Will try again at some point

I think I just like this period of Cave the best - 'Boatman's Call' to 'Abbatoir Blues' material just sits right with me, but as I said, I have a problem with theatric/intense performance stuff sometimes.

I do dig the early to mid 90s albums a fair amount too though. Before that is the material I know less well or struggle with a bit more.

“No more…” started a new period after the letdown of “Nocturama”. “Boatman” was fine, but to me it is really from “Are you the one…” to “Black hair” where it shines. There’s too much reference to religion on the album overall, it’s best when he sticks to singing about girls/love/heartbreak instead of god imo. “Where Do We Go Now But Nowhere?” is among his best ballads.
