I don't know how Germany does it. She continues to give birth to some of the greatest hardcore and death metal acts this world has come to know. While there are dozens and dozens of bands that fit that description, today I'm specifically talking about Deadlock. The German death metallers captivate their audience by playing melodic black and death metal induced with gothic elements circling around their already dark music.
Death and Destruction cover the topics at hand with "Earth. Revolt". The entire album is formulated around destructive melodies and a tight sounding musical spinal cord. The great thing about Deadlock is that they can get into death and destruction and show you more than meets the eye. They explore all variations and degrees and for that reason stand out amongst many of today's death and black metal bands.
I know this is a common comparison when describing a black metal band, but in quite a few songs the band sounds like 'Midian' era Cradle of Filth. Specifically on one of the album's best tracks "10,000 Generations of Blood". Aside from the COF comparison, the band has a very unique and very interesting sound to their music. One of their more unique songs is track entitled "May Angels Come", in which the song goes beyond your typical black metal boundaries and extracts something magnificent.
Something I found interesting about "Earth. Revolt" is that the album is almost a soundtrack to the destruction of the world and how man overcomes it. I never really thought about it that way until I heard the final track on the album ("Harmonic") and from there it was all put into perspective. "Harmonic" is a track unlike anything else on the album. It's a little less than 2 minutes and is just a beautiful piano peace with angelic female vocals by S. Weniger (she can be heard throughout the rest of the album as well).
Deadlock has found a place in my usual album rotations. "Earth. Revolt" is an absolute masterpiece and should be regarded as so.
I retract whatever I said last year, fuck that guy. Honestly I was shocked at how good this album is. I prefer the rawer production than Wolves, it makes it a lot heavier and not as clean. Wolves is still great and I cannot wait for the new cd to drop.
