pretentious = it's trying to be meaningful (like any work of art tbh) but I don't understand it so it is not meaningful (to me and therefore I'm labeling it as such)

there definitely is such a thing as pretentiousness in music. But the term is overused and more often than not misused

@Artuma
I didn't say that and you know I didn't say that.
@Barber
Well, the main goal of music is usually to express or provoke feelings, maybe also to make people think and make a statement. Now it doesn't matter at all what feeling - anger, love, maybe just mindless fun & joy.
AFA seems to see that in this record, for me it seems stale and somewhat mechanical, even if it is technically pretty good work. But one main question for me is always: Will there be a situation or emotional state where I could "feel it" in some way - actually the horrible word transcend would somehow fit. I don't see that happening here.

I'd say if pretense is present in music it'd be more akin to what revolves around the music, like the artist that makes it for instance (ex: kanye west god complex) press reviews of interviews, and hardly present within the music itself ('cept occasionally within the lyrics)

Well, that's a given. There are an awful lot of these guys, but don't you ever have the feeling that some songs or albums just exist to show off how great the artist is?
Just for the record: This doesn't necessarily fall into that category

Once again, Jac gives the only insight that matters. Everyone go home.

"but don't you ever have the feeling that some songs or albums just exist to show off how great the artist is? "
I can sometimes think that way about an artist but in the end there's almost never anyway to confirm that; even records made as mere cash grabs can turn up being from the heart (for exemple but in another domain, Dali loved the fuck out of money and there's no denying, even he said it, that he made a lot of his art just for cash in his latter years but it still looks awesome nevertheless (subjective opinion but yaknow)).

As for AC of course I believe that it's made at first for love of music :3

Certainly no way to prove, but then again it's art, so no chance to prove anything at all (as we all know thanks to guys like David Bowie you shouldn't even trust the artist's statements). And I agree that cash grabs can be emotional (a perception thing of course).
AC doesn't feel like a "love of music" kind of thing to me. I mean, Lion In A Coma is practically them fooling around and nothing else. And the reason why it turns out great is cause it seems playful and like they really enjoyed that. It's just a fun listen. Some other songs here sound like they treated them like math problems.
And again I don't want to say all music that is thought through is bad, quite the opposite, but it somehow contradicts their strenghts as it seems.
