the only songs of theirs I've heard are Crank and Black Metallic so I haven't gotten the full album experience yet but I plan on hearing both soon

One of the best albums in this time period. Shame it doesn't get more recognition.

Agreed, one of the best bands in the genre

Wow, it definitely needs much more conversation around here. Black Metallic is bliss.

“ahh yes Catherine Wheel Ferment one of the 2 big anomalies in the shoegaze scene, the other being Swervedriver's debut album Raise, 2 bands associated with the Shoegaze scene that while retaining the beautiful washes of guitar noise of shoegaze decided on employing some driving agression with their guitars unlike their peers like Ride, Slowdive. My Bloody Valentine and the many others, both bands employed the hazy cloudy sound of shoegaze but turned listeners on their heads with the pure aggressive sonic fury of their debut album's leaving the stragglers in their dust”
This^^^
Someone’s Comment from 2010 - perfectly sums up their sound. I’d probably add Loop’s A Gilded Eternity as well.
Spinning this album in 2020 - still bloody amazing.

Will try Chrome again but think I only listened to it once or twice. Don’t think it left much of an impression otherwise I’d remember it.

Must confess that it’s much better than I remember when I tried it when it came out, but I was then (and still now) a total indie head. And the shift away from an indie/shoegaze sensibility towards a more polished, cleaner sounding rock oriented sound just didn’t sit well with me back then. Listening to it now nearly 30 years later, it’s definitely worth investing more time in, but that gut reaction is still the same, and I enjoy Ferment significantly more. It happened with most of the bands that I was into circa 87-92 where with each subsequent release they moved away from the indie scene as they either matured, had better studios, tried new things or chased after mainstream appeal. But I generally always favoured their debuts.

Everyone please listen to Adam & Eve from this band as well, absolutely blew me away.

Whatever the genre, this has some beautiful soundscapes throughout. More dreampop than their other acclaimed Chrome, their guitar tones on this are seriously delicious

This is better than Chrome, but not astronomically so. Chrome has Crank which stands alone better than any of these tracks, but as a whole Ferment has a much better and more cohesive sound front to back.
