honestly, i think this is on par with the debut - minus some screaming here and there they're very similar. this is definitely hookier than casually dressed in chorus melodies etc, whereas casually dressed has a few more catchy guitar riffs. but there's definitely enough heavyness here to satisfy anyone who liked casually dressed.

It's a refreshing album nontheless

I mostly agree with this review except that Beneath the Burning Tree is a great song - top 5 of the album definately.

But I am pleased to know that one of my favorite bands has had a good review.

yeah beneath the burning tree is very well written. the first half may be a little typical, but the odd time signatured but also super catchy second half is something that would get any crowd jumping like maniacs. this is an extremely underrated band ...i realise theyre very popular, but some of the critics have always been super super harsh - i mean allmusic.com gave casually dressed 2.5/5 - are they smoking crack 24/7? even a non punk rock fan can appreaciate that's a genre defining record.

Played a gig with these guys years ago and they were so raw and full of energy. I feel that they have lost that edge or maybe its a natural progression as part of maturing process? Either way I think I will check these out in full when time permits.

This album lacks energy.... there's nothing that makes me feel energized or wanting to listen to it. There are bits and pieces that leave me wanting more, only to be crushed by more nothingness.

*sigh*

I get "maturing", but last I checked you can still show SOME energy, while playing music. "Without energy, music is just a bunch of riffs, drums, and talking..."

These guys are running out of chances for me...

I don't really get that viewpoint personally, i think tracks like "rules and games", "ghosts","someday the fire" etc are equally "energetic" to songs on casually dressed... my gripe if anything would be the 3 laid back acoustic-ish songs taking away from the feel of the energy. And the last track is kind of misplaced.

Finally listened to this all the way through tonight, and I'm not impressed. Most of it was just really boring. I'll give it a couple more spins in the next week or so, but i'd imagine settling around a 2-2.5

It's good to see this band return to form.

Also, i think the album covers pretty good? Reminds me of Coheed and Cambria's a bit....

^I actually enjoy the cover too. Reminds me of a sci-fi version of Taking Back Sunday's Where You Want to Be.

It would be more accurate if you changed "awful" to "awesome."

i dropped my rating to 3.5. i don't know if they'll ever be as good as they were in the days of casually dressed, but i'll be listening to everything they release from now hoping they will.

Kind of saddening really, up until Hours these guys had such a good thing going. Not that this was bad, just.. I dunno. I loved their early stuff.

Tales Don't Tell Themselves hacked tons of their fanbase, in 2005 they were probably the most popular modern rock band in the UK, now they're like, still popular but not like appearing on every music channel or whatever.

I hope they do something really great next time around.
