"Heafy’s pig-squeal vocals during the verse gel well with the strained melodic pre-chorus, while Travis Smith’s renewed love affair with the blast beat is, at least it becomes clear he can’t snap out of it, a welcome re-addition to their sound."

great review as always..this sentence felt a little awkward to me, maybe it could be split up?

not a big deal tho..

when i saw these guys on the "sounds of the underground" tour as an opening act i liked them but the headlining show for "the crusade" was a little cheesy imo..

People seem to really have a misconception when it comes to Heafy's vocal style apparently. There are absolutely zero death metal vocals or pig squeals on this album, with the only exception being Upon The Shores which is a bonus track. If there were death metal vocals, this album would have fared a lot worse off, if you dont believe me listen to upon the shores. While, yes they're true death metal vocals, it does not fit the music whatsoever.

Heafy's style is very much in the tradition of both Metal and Hardcore, clean vocals being the traditional metal and shouted hardcore approach. Hence the use of the term Metalcore. The style of music otherwise is up for debate on nearly every internet forum, but my opinion is metalcore with some thrash elements. It cannot be true thrash as thrash has always traditionally been accompanied by an unpolished production, giving it a rawer sound.

Perhaps just a coincidence, but on The Police's song "Wrapped Around Your Finger", the second line contains a lyric:

"caught between Scylla and Charybdis"

.....

Track 2. Torn between Scylla and Charybdis

They didn't steal it from that song.

The song is about choosing what extremely tough decision you need to make. Another way of saying "Stuck between a Rock and a Hard Place."This Message Edited On 01.05.09

..."pig squeal vocals"? >_>

Any review that rips on the travesty that is Rolling Stone is automatically good. Still, good review.

I haven't heard much from this. I don't really plan to.

This isn't half bad. Much better than The Crusade.
