probably one of the best third wave, or gybe influenced post rock albums. Although The Evpatoria Report's Golevka comes close.

using 'third wave post rock' in a real sentence unironically lmao

first wave = talk talk and slint and stuff?

second wave = bark psychosis and maybe gy!be and stuff?

third wave = uhh idk it was pretty much continuous development after that as far as i know, rather than a wave

Third wave accurately describes an era of post-rock. In the same way as 2nd wave black metal does.

"third wave = uhh idk it was pretty much continuous development after that as far as i know, rather than a wave"

What development? I have not found much new from the genre in the last decade. Other than post-metal if you consider that relevant.

what i meant is that, if i'm on the right track with the first and second wave in the first place, i don't distinguish a separate 'wave' after the second one

The 3rd wave was propelled by explosions in the sky. Which took influenced from GYBE, shortening the songs.

alright. i guess that's too much of a subtlety for me to consider it another wave but i can kinda see your point

If I was gonna break it down with dates would say 1st wave:1991- 1996

2nd wave: 1997 -2002 3rd: 2003+

i think armand from postrock paper scissors summed it up really well in an episode but i cant remember it exactly. postrock started out as bands with a similar ethos regarding composition, but different and independent styles, sounds and origins. then it narrowed to a few distinct styles. then it became about a style and a sound (instrumental/twinkly), rather than an approach.

1st wave (pre-1997): slint, talk talk, bark psychosis, tortoise, disco inferno
2nd wave (1997-2003): godspeed, mogwai, sigur ros
3rd wave (post-2003): explosions, this will destroy you, caspian

but i do think waves are unimportant when describing postrock because there are plenty of post-2003 bands that have more in common with 2nd wave than 3rd wave, not to mention bands that persisted through the eras. easier just to say postrock and forget about the waves.

"there are plenty of post-2003 bands that have more in common with 2nd wave " Sure, but those bands are anomalies.
