I feel like there's nuance being missed or outright ignored here for the usual e-peen measuring, tbh. People here hardly ever try to understand one another and it's very frustrating to watch. Like I would never want this to sound anything like Jesus Piece or like some modern, non-punk tough guy drivel. I just think it was very possible to get a more biting sound with the equipment they had in 1984 and just didn't. For example, look up Napalm Death's Scum from just 3 years later and hear how LOUD that album sounds in comparison, even at low volume. It's not the tech, it's literally the mix and the recording. It just is a bit tame. I love this album, too. I just think the mix and master is the extra bit that could take it over the top. There could be more break up/peaking on everything and it wouldn't hurt the songs. Killing Joke had a more brutal mix than this on their self titled from 1980.

"great minds think alike lol"

I'm dying for you to elaborate.

I mean, people are still making old school hardcore punk to this day, so theoretically you could still be there. I was already into hardcore with breakdowns and jerseys and gym shorts, but when I was 20 or 21 in like 2014 - 2015, I was taken to a town where people did the old school punk thing and it changed my view on everything. Hardcore of the modern era suddenly felt so tropey and redundant and punk felt so classic and timeless for some reason, but both of them can be lame and both can be good. I just like punk better, though.

i mean it's kinda the same thing with emo for me, i like that more than standard punk. strangely enough i'm not extremely big on Rites of Spring but 90s onward everything started sounding better.

i mean bad religion came out in 1983 with a better guitar tone and thicker production than these first couple albums too so there's that. i'm not saying 1981 had to have some perfect sound but it's shocking how muted this and Damaged feel to me. Because these songs likely sound better live.

@90: One of Us and Dissociation rule equally
