Supertramp's best effort no question. The later albums are way too pop infused (Breakfast in America), while this is a solid crossover prog release.
The album is very consistent, due to it being heavily piano based, but that doesn't take away from any of the songs.
School opens up the album with a harmonica solo and then enters Hodgson's soft spoken voice. Cheesy lyrics aside, this is a great song. The bass line rules, especially on the build up to the incredible piano solo.
Track 2, Bloody Well Right, is a hard rock number with piano complimenting it nicely, awesome guitar leads and a rad sax outro. Rick Davies vocals are perfect for the song.
The ballads on the album are stunning - see Davies dreamy piano number "Asylum" and Hodgson's Hide In Your Shell. Both songwriters give excellent vocal performances throughout the album.
No doubt everyone has heard the hit single "Dreamer" with it's hook. It's been overplayed on the radio, but it's still a good track with Hodgson's superb vocal performance.
The title track is a symphonic prog masterpiece. Every member kills it on this song, notably John Helliwell who gives a brilliant sax performance.
8 well structured songs with epic piano melodies, great chord progressions, full bass, and excellent contrasting vocals.

Breakfast is a little bit inconsistent in the middle and this has a way better lyrical concept but it's still an excellent album

Hide in Your Shell, Asylum and Rudy's lyrics are so fucking true
Last 2 minutes of Asylum are the most emotive thing I've heard

The music is great on this one, but I think the concept & lyrics push it to the top.

Fantastic album! The lyrics are amazing all the way through and it's still pretty deep musically. Dreamer is the weakest track for me; it ruins the flow of the album a bit. Other than that, it's a true classic.

"Dreamer is the weakest track for me; it ruins the flow of the album a bit."
"Dreamer" is a great opener for side two of the record. When you put the needle down the keyboard jumps right out at you. Now it's stuck in the middle of the album. That's not the way it was meant to be. I’m not saying that it's bad; I just think it's better as an opener.
