There is no way this deserves a 1, I haven't heard all of it, but Strawberry Swing, Violet Hill, Viva La Vida, and Lost are real good.

Strawberry Swing is very infectous, Viva La Vida is ace as well, and Lost may be one of the best on the album. Surprisingly, Violet Hill is my least favorite, (though it is still amazing).

The thing I really like about coldplay is how "chill" their music is. It's not something that demands attention or focus, but something you can have on in the backround and enjoy.

More on topic..

Is this better than A Rush of Blood? that's probably my favorite Coldplay album so far..This Message Edited On 06.20.08

This is more consistent than A Rush of Blood to the Head, and I'd say, overall, better.

However, this album isn't really the type to be played as background music. I mean there's nothing crazy, but the songs are more than just background noise this time

Nice review, one of the best Coldplay albums to drop since Parachutes. Hopefully they keep spoonfeeding us good sweet stuff instead of trash.

I agree completely with the review, this album is really great. Coldplay would have known it would skyrocket to the top of the charts no matter what rubbish they released. But they have really delivered, the album has depth and rewards repeated listens. X&Y had a bit of Top 20 syndrome (although I liked that album, too) but this time they've taken their sound in a new direction, which was brave. I mean, 6 and 7 minute split tracks? Take that, radio. Viva La Vida is an album, not just a collection of singles. The songwriting is really strong and Martin sounds great.

I've listened to the album several times through now, and it's pretty good IMHO. One thing that strikes me is the degree to which the songs on Viva are improved by their context in the album - it plays a LOT better from start to finish than as a shuffled collection of tracks. I know this is a strange comparison but listening to it reminds me of listening to the Smashing Pumpkins' album Adore - the meticulous attention to atmosphere? dunno. Lovers in Japan, Death and all his friends, Viva la vida and Lost get my vote for being the highlights. I'd certainly rate Viva ahead of the catchy but formulaic X&Y, but I don't think the songs are quite in the same league as those from Parachutes and AROBTTH.

Individually, the tracks aren't as good as X&Y but together they complement each other a lot better which makes this a far superior album. Personally, Violet Hill is the best song followed by Yes, I wouldn't go as far as putting this ahead of Rush of Blood because its not.

Rush of Blood had both the highlight tracks presented in X&Y and an overall excellence, the only songs from Viva La Vida that I dislike are the hidden tracks and perhaps Death and All His Friends which was a pretty weak track to end the album with.

Anyways, AROBTTH is still the clear favorite with Viva La Vida behind, then X&Y, then Parachutes for me.This Message Edited On 07.08.08This Message Edited On 07.08.08

Great review, great album.

I've listened to this over and over online. I can't get it out of my head...and Violet Hill was a favorite of mine before I even knew it was a single. Still my favorite song, but the rest of the album is amazing, as well.

Wish this album could've kept the rating it had when it first started out. Oh, well...I still think it'll have a respectable position on a lot of "Year's Best" lists. This Message Edited On 07.17.08
