Really impressive review Electric City. I enjoyed Parachutes quite a bit and I kind of lost interest in the band after that. I will surely check this out. Sounds like some thought provoking stuff.

Haven't heard the album yet.
My main question is: how does it compare to Radiohead's 'In Rainbows'.

Although their last 2 albums were quite ok, I have always seen them as 2nd or 3rd rate Radiohead. Radiohead turned into more adventurous and experimental paths, and it was written in the stars Coldplay would do the same thing at some point after 'A rush of blood'. That's pretty obvious:
1. Chriss Martin can't keep on singing about teenager-like feelings, he's a father now, and he's married one of the most beautifull woman on earth; that side was just dead-end; at least if he honestly cares about writing honest music/lyrics.
2. the fan-base grows up as well; and outgrows this kind of music; younger people choose new groups like the 'kooks'. Simply said, Coldplay has to grow up with their core-audience, that's the only viable way big-league groups can persue a long career.

So I'm a little curious, I would be pleasantly surprised if it even comes close to the last Radiohead. surprise me !

it doesnt sound like In Rainbows, that's for sure. I wasn't a fan of that record (read my review for my full thoughts!), but I will say this is easily Coldplay's best, most mature record.

that should be correct. several tracks are divided into two songs. I believe tracks 5, 6, and 10 do this. This Message Edited On 06.17.08

I have not expected a band like coldplay changing into such a drastic great direction.. Love the album. There is probably one or 2 weak tracks but otther than that great album. My top three go between: "Life in Technicolor" "Viva La Vida" and "Lovers In Japan/Regin Of Love" This might change of course lol.

This release seems to solidify their overall library. Pretty good band actually.

Why didn't they just separate Lovers In Japan / Reign of Love, Yes and the "hidden song" in there, and Death and All His Friends and The Escapist? It's kind of silly, especially because Lovers in Japan and Yes are good while Reign of Love and the hidden one (Chinese Sleep Chant I think) are boring.

Anyway, I've only listened to this a little, but I'm not that blown away by it. It's different yeah, but a lot of the songs lack something that really draws me in to them. Also I really don't like 42, the transitions just feel awkward. The best songs on it are probably Strawberry Swing, Lovers in Japan, Cemeteries of London, and Violet Hill. I'm surprised people think Strawberry Swing is the worst one on it. Oh well.

I'll have to listen a few times more before I actually rate it though, maybe I'll all of a sudden love it or something.
