"this is not their best album by a long shot"
I spun this, Darkened Shrines, and Gods Detest over the last couple days and it was def my fave of those three. is there a sleeper candidate in the discog?

well those whom is my fav but i think almost all their albums are at least more interesting because more unique than this one.
annihilation feels like nile by the numbers to me, more brutal, more extreme, less experimental.

Catacombs and Darkened shrines are clearly superior.
The main point I prefer in Darkened shrines is the drumming: it is a lot more organic, creative and playful compared to pure speed, technical prowess and accuracy of this one.
Catacombs is a lot more in your face and has the non metal parts way better integrated into the songs, as opposite to them being in interludes like here.

Nile by the numbers for me starts with Those whom the Goids detest (even though that one was on a very high level). That's the first album of theirs that didn't really do anything new anymore but rode the succesful formula of Darkened shrines and Annihilation (apparently the ythemsleves saw that the Ithiphallic approach wasn'tthat great...)

those whom is very different to the albums that came before stylistically imo which is why you saying its by the numbers seems pretty baffling to me lol

First 4 Nile albums are all essential. Then its a huge drop off.

I basically agree with Hawks, but TWTGD is awesome. In my view it is just a great album thou not essential imo. I don't see anything that substantially is added to the AOTW formula.

Reinhold, wenn ich bitten darf!
well first of all those whom has a slightly different lyric focus than the other nile albums, it focuses more on the arabian peninsula and the levant region of cultures around the waning of egypt as a power. the albums melodies feel more arabian inspired than usual, it kinda feels darker too. like a huge part of my appreciation for nile comes from reading the liner notes as that was pretty much the first time i experienced all of their albums. reading the lyrics and liner notes while jamming the album. thats where those whom stood out to me first, and then later i recognized how catchy and unique most of the songs on that album are compared to most of their other stuff.

Yeah, their liner notes rule.. Discography run just led me to Black Seeds, what a beast that is. It lacks the chunkycatchiness of catacombs, but fuck, it's blasting me into oblivion...
