I wanted to bump Wowee but I can’t have a whole page of my own comments (slight exaggeration) so this’ll do. Amazing band.

The indie scene in the 90s was much better than its sorry state today for sure.

Any similar recs? The more obvious/essential the better tbh. I grew up listening to all the ‘wrong’ indie, i.e. whatever revival garbage was coming out when I was a teenager. I think this put me off exploring further for many years.

I’m trying to think of other indie bands I still like and there aren’t many... TVOTR up to Dear Science, Mew up to Stories, early Interpol, most of The National’s stuff. Some Modest Mouse. That one good Bloc Party album. PJ Harvey if she counts. Of course Radiohead, but then I don’t really count them. Oh I love that Manchester Orchestra album, weirdly. I’m drawing blanks already.

The most obvious rec is Silver Jews, who shared members with Pavement on and off, including Malkmus (and imo were a tad better overall; at the very least David Berman was a superior songwriter to Malkmus). Many relegate the Jews to a Pavement side project but they were absolutely a great band in their own right (and if I’ve got my history right, actually existed before Pavement even if Pavement’s first releases came out sooner).

Also, make sure you do your homework and check a few Fall albums ;] This Nation... and Hex... get the most shouts, but I rate Perverted By Language a lot

Don’t worry, The Fall are already on my ‘list’ as a matter of urgency.

I should probably just bump slanted up. This still has amazing peaks.

i think this is kind of (hyperbole incoming) the ultimate 90s american indie rock album

kind of like everything before and after held this as omnipresent appreciation

not my favourite though
