Every now and then when he’s being annoying I need to remind myself that Homme wrote the riffs to this and Red Sun, and is therefore entirely justified in sniffing farts for the rest of his life if he so chooses after that priceless contribution to our culture.

Yeah and then went on to write another 30+ near genius level songs over the next 25 years

The well of truly great Homme riffs was running dry by 2006 - but that’s a good innings.
Probably had more in the tank than the lauded riff machine Jack White
‘Like Clockwork’ almost acknowledges he hasn’t the killer riffs he used to and mixes the writing formula a bit to compensate.

"lauded riff machine Jack White"
...in what world? hmm

I mean Jack White has sold a lot of records, is a critical darling, was an indie darling and he's only really known for riffs when you get down to it. He's bluesy riffs mainly, like a more indie update on ZZ Top or some shit.
No one listens to Jack White for his singing.
These dudes tend to only have so many really really great riff ideas in them, or they get complacent, one or the other - either way the riffs dry up

My dad used to play guitar a bit and just had this brutal way of assessing the careers of musicians/guitarists:
"well, you can sort of tell they've run out of riffs at this point"
"listen to the middle 8's on this album, really lazy, they're running out of song ideas"
"every song is just slowly fading out, it sounds bad across a whole album"
etc!

ah right, so you're just talking about the mainstream perception of JW hence "lauded" and (presumably?) not your own perspective. I was only seeking that clarification. And yeah, I guess it seems fairly unlikely people would care about his music if the riffs turned stale.
I've witnessed similar things happen for sure. Artists need to diversify their song-writing chops and offer something different, as the well will inevitably run dry eventually

I liked a few White Stripes songs, a couple of ok albums, but I'm not that into his style no - a classic '3 out of 5' artist really
I could get the appeal though while he was at his most popular - but yeah, the lauded isn't coming from me
I only mentioned Jack White because their peak popularity was about the same time (2000-2005?) and both faded similarly from there - could have gone with Matt Bellamy of Muse for the same era but then his songs are a little less purely reliant on riffs

To be fair to Homme that is 'Like Clockwork' - as much as it doesn't quite tickle my sweet spot (I still prefer him with his best riffs and faster tempos, and less emphasis on vocals/backing vocals - I'm not sure he writes amazing vocal melodies tbh) I can still respect it's a solid album
