i hate to say this, and not to endorse drugs, but imo a song like ''Teenager'' has a vibe that only dudes on drugs could create, lyrics too, like a drugged out poet or something. The song sounds otherwordly. i've never heard a song with the same sound as that one, these guys were blasted out of their minds while making the album, but since they were talented and great songwriters and creative, it created an otherwordly sounding album instead of like dudes boringly talking about drugs

btw chino on ''Back to School": "And they didn't believe that my voice was broke, and I had to go on TV in front of a bunch of motherfuckers, millions and millions of people, no throat, and had to sing a stupid fucking song that I don't even fucking like"
lmao, he had like problems with his throat and could barely speak and shit and they performed this on some late night show, he was pissed and the truth came out.
I read that the label told them they had to make the song or make a trendy sort of sounding song, in line with other stuff at the time, or they wouldn't really promote the white pony record, so they agreed and did it.
Probably a good decision, imo.
and for what it is the song isn't as bad as other hip hop/rock fusion shit that was coming out at the time. at least chino and co really grew up in the hood on some like chicano style shit, so at least when he raps about that stuff in the song, you can really imagine him doing it back in school. he was thugged out apparently. If you look at the neighborhood deftones are from in sacramento, particularly chino, its super rough full of like latino gangs and poverty.

"'Back to School' was a mistake. A calculated song, that had been built up with only one aim in mind: It should be a single. ... 'Back to School' was released because I was an idiot. I wanted to prove something [to the record company]. Months later, after White Pony was released, they wanted us to do a new version of "Pink Maggit". They said we lost our heaviness, and there were no more singles on the album. First, I wanted to stick this idea up my ass, but then I thought: 'I'm gonna show those fuckers how easy it is to create a hit-single.'"
Agreed

^ Had to check that on Spotify... Lol. It wasn't on the CD I owned... obviously added it after. I remember 'Back to School' being a non-album single/EP, that I never bothered with.
'White Pony' never needed this, and I think as a body of work, it's weaker for its inclusion. 'Mini Maggit' with all the hook and none of the teeny nu-metal shit was so much better.
This single (and sk8erboi video) were released when I wasn't sold on them (and ironically, when they seemed to move away from nu-metal trappings), and did NOTHING to convince me to their cause. Got into them later when it became widely clear that they were fully intent on widening their palette.

back to school sucks balls compared to Feiticeira as an opener imo, that opening drum groove from Abe is killer

idk, even when I was in middle school and unironically listening to nu-metal, I could detect a distinct tongue-in-cheek vibe to Back To School. It's obviously not as good as Feiticeira which is like a top 5 Deftones track, but I never saw it as a blemish on the album. If anything, Elite irks me more.

I'm digging deep here for the hottest take to defend School... I don't think Pink Maggit would give me the same levels of chills if it didn't bring back and re-contextualize the bits from that song. It makes for a pretty surreal book-end
