Three Days Grace is a four piece band from Ontario, Canada.
I had the pleasure of seeing them live, opening for Nickelback, and the set prompted me to buy their cd.
Adam Gontier: VOCALS/GUITAR
Neil Sanderson: DRUMS
Brad Walst: BASS
Barry: GUITAR (although I don't think he recorded on this album)
I was not Disappointed.
What I Liked About The Album:
this Cd is high energy and fast paced right from the start. the killer riffs and catchy lyrics will have a lot of people hooked pretty fast. the CD is great, but the Live shows are even better! Tracks like "Just Like You" "I hate everything about you" "Let You Down" "Overrated" are all high points of the album...although, IMO there isn't a bad song on the album.
The lyrics are a bit dark, and that's not a bad thing. The songs are written when Adam get's pissed off about something, and therefore, the lyrics can get very personal and emotional.
I also like that all the songs don't sound the same, which happens a lot with Nu-Metal type songs. Each song is about something different and there is a good variety of topics, and music displayed on the album. and the lyrics are easily discernable and quite enjoyable
What I didn't like:
There's not much I dislike about this CD...THe songs are all put together pretty well, and all the songs are high quality....The Lyrics in some songs strat to repeat themsleves a lot, or for a long time, but it doesn't get boring.
There are no musical masterpieces, like Stairway to Heaven or Hotel California.......but that doesn't make it bad.
I can see why fans of metal wouldn't like this album, as it has no solos, and they use power chords a lot, but there is variety, and it is still enjoyable.
Tracks to look out for
BURN: this is the Opening track. it starts with static noises and comes in heavy and hard. it's a great opening track
(I Hate) Everything About You: This was the First single from Three Days Grace, and it ripped through the charts. (In Canada at least) the chorus
"I hate everything about you, why do I love you"
is a great line for the soing, and fits the mood splendidly. the song is about being with your significant other, and realizing that you hate being who you are.
Scared: brings Up the pace a bit, faster music, and faster lyrics. A great track to pick up the pace of the album. This song isn't as depressing as Home (The song right before it) It is a solid track where the music fits perfectly. Adam's voice sounds a little out of place in some parts, but the rest of the song makes up for it.
Home: a heavy track about people expecting too much from you, and just wanting to be alone, away from the world. great tune, great words.
Now Or Never: This is a more melodic song (although not without it's heaviness) it's about making decisions, and it has a great message behind it. This is one of my favourites on the cd
Wake Up: NO this is not a cover of the RATM song, and no it has nothing in common with that song at all exceot the title. It's a cool little song opening with a nice riff that go perfectly into the heavier prechorus and then the chorus and another verse. this song is also one of my favourites, although some may not like it.
Overrated: This song, like the title suggests, is about overrated people, bands in general...
the chorus:
"you made it, you played it, your *** is overrated"
think about it...bands not knowing when to call it quits, people who don't realize they're taking themselves too seriously etc.
You can tell Adam is reaally pissed off about the things he sings about in this song.
Recomendations
Three Days Grace is similar to bands such as: Finger Eleven, Disturbed, Linkin Park, etc. fans of those bands would enjoy three Days Grace.
People who enjoy the following genres, may or may not enjoy Three days Grace: Nu Metal, Nu Rock, Punk, Rock.
I suggest you check them out (even if you just download a few track to see what you think)
Overall Impression
This is a very good debut CD from this band, there are very few flaws, and the music is all very good and it's great to listen to. Looking ahead, I see only good things for this band...although, with only one cd under their belts, it's too early to tell.
Rating: this is a great CD, and I really love it.
However, I can see how it would turn a lot of people off. I think if you give it time, the music will grow on you, and you will come to enjoy it.
But, then again, maybe not.....I've been wrong before....
I give this cd a 4/5.
