Honestly Gyro's opinion may be the opinion of a lot of people out there. Most people are used to rock/pop/hip hop/electronic/somethingsomething music where artists try to sound as different from each other as possible and use a bunch of instruments and stuff to sound more interesting but that isn't what happens with a lot of jazz (and classical music because of course I have to mention it), differences are more... Subtle, I guess, it can sound a bit samey at first.

this is my first time listening to this particular album, yes. turned it off after 35 mins. i couldn't pick a single memorable moment. again, i'd play this while cooking, or in the background while company is over, but sitting here on social media listening to this feels like a chore.

i'd get the critique if this wasn't like... the most ground-breaking jazz album of all time? even more than a love supreme, tbh.

i get laughed at and called a noob and shit all the time for not liking these supposed masterpieces lol. they just all sound the damn same to me. i do love classical and jazz too. quite a bit of it.

i'm really trying to not be a snob cunt here, but it massively improves your enjoyment to know at least very basic music theory.

i play a bit of piano and guitar. i'm no aficionado, but i 100% respect the hell out of these musicians. coltrane is among the most gifted players of all time, i just wish this didn't sound so bloody homogeneous.

Do you? If you criticize this for being "bloody homogeneous" I can't imagine you listening to "quite a bit" of classical music, lol. Classical is like, the king of sounding samey at first.

musical prowess doesn't inherently mean the playing is interesting. like i said, he's fantastic, but without any musical variety idk how you guys can stomach listening to something like this for over an hour. can you pick out any distinguishing moments on this? like, are there any 'holy shit' moments that come to mind when you think about this?

i dunno man, this doesn't sound like any other jazz i've ever listened to but hey, it's my experience, not yours.

Yeah, the first 30 seconds.

i'm picky with classical and jazz, that's the thing. i love artists like arvo part, henryk goreck, steve reich. and honestly, the same extends to metal. i can't listen to most death metal and funeral because most of it sounds the same to me.

edit: for my examples, i'm sure you'd argue those are more contemporary, to which i would say.. yeah. a lot of early classical is much the same as jazz, kind of boring technically proficient stuff

first 30 seconds is good, but like... yeah. def not a 'holy shit' moment, in my mind. i do like the speed of it though. fast tempo for the first little bit. i could easily see having a good time to this while cooking. maybe i'll try to get into jazz more that way. put on some of the heralded greats while i'm making food and see if anything sticks with me lol

Oh, man... You're making me feel like a complete old school snob or something when you mention those three. And what do you mean by early? Guillaume de Machaut early? Or George Frideric Handel """"early""""?

Oh my God, Beethoven isn't even close to early, man! Like, he isn't even """"early"""". And I thought Beethoven was classical for people who don't like classical... At least he's like... One of the fucking greatest composers of all time, damn. Anyway, this is a jazz thread and I think I'm starting to just sound like an asshole at this point, so uhhhhhhh... Listen to more jazz and classical man... Or not... I don't know... You probably should though.
