Album finally clicked for me even as a longtime Enslaved guy. Love it. Ascension's ending is so sick.

Same, my intuition suggest the same. This band is very creative/innovators, continually changing and keeping their roots. Tour De Force, they do. Not many bands achieve that successfully.

I remember very little Enslaved outside of Vikingligr / Frost and Axioma in fact
rated some others, actually like some of it (supposedly Isa is one of them), but I'm struggling to separate this in my mind from let's say Vertebrae / Below The Lights, for instance

Totally get that. Although this is good and Vertebrae is not too good.

Vertebrae is 3.0 currently.
Certain releases must've felt more distinct when I was running though their discog. Axioma was my fave, so naturally that one was memorable, and their first two were pretty easy to separate due to some obvious stylistic differences.
The in-between is a bit of a mess in my mind, so I should probably revisit.

axioma is memorable for being blackmetal park yeah (or black metal reveries?)

Yes you should Demon! Mardraum especially, such an underrated and overlooked record. Messy, aggressive and weird.
|
| |
do u find any sonic similarity between the weirdness of mardraum and some of mayhems later stuff per chance?
