About as good a review as one can contribute..at this point. I can't possibly say how good it really is or argue whether or not it's their best. I can say however, that from an emotional level - I LOVE this album. Within 3 listens I have experienced a 'rainbow' of emotions from this album whereas I normally only feel isolated, paranoid, or hopeless from Radiohead. This album has giddy moments, and positive, hopeful emotions to add to their core emotional pallate. Many of the songs here have layers of simultaneous emotion that results from the instrumentation, phrasing, and the fact that Radiohead are returning to a more collaborative approach. While Nigel Godrich is still a big part of the sound, there is a real collaborative chemistry that seems to recall ok computer and The Bends...but different in emotional scope and certainly the beats & percussion. I agree w/the review...This is Phil Selway's best. Beautiful performance. His application and execution of electronic beats mixed with analog drums is flawless. Another difference is that this album not only has soul...it has 'Soul'. It's Thom that unabashedly employs a 'Soul' sound in some of the melody structures and phrasing. It's beautiful and haunting. it also seems to lift his voice and allows a free, confident tone...that also soars to Operatic heights. Soul music proves a good genre for Radiohead to encircle. It provides a juxtaposed element to their trademark dissonance. It allows them to 'play' adding both major and minor chords in unexpected places and pulls against the tension felt in the guitars and drums. I honestly can't rate this analytically yet. I can only say from a gut level that 'Rainbows' is their most beautiful, lush record. It's warm like a big hug and intones that 'The Kid A's Are Alright'. Can't wait to live with this album a bit .

Real nice job with the review. I've been diggin In Rainbows hard. fav tracks would probably be All I Need or House of Cards, but I really enjoyed the whole album. It was the easiest Radiohead album for me to get into

Don't really agree with the people who say this is Phil's best album. I mean, it has some of his best moments in places, for sure, but he has just as a good or better moments scattered across his carear. Something like Pyramid song for example boggles my mind more than anything off here, drum wise.
Something like Arpeggi, when that beat came in, I was like, oh, okay, THAT beat. I used to play that beat all the time when I used to drum, I mean stuff like that is pretty underwhelming if you see what I mean.

Although I'm sure it will grow on me as all Radiohead eventually does (it took me nearly a year and four full runthroughs of OK Computer before I "got it."), I must agree that its main problem is no standout tracks! It's a record of minimilism, and although beautiful, dare I say it seems...boring? (GAH! The blasphemy burns my fingers as I type it!) I must say that I find Bodysnatchers to be best choice for a single though, agree? At least for the "rocker."

I just realized why Radiohead no standout tracks...they wanted each person to have their own "standout track". In "The Bends" or "Amnesiac" it was pretty obvious the standout was, but on In Rainbows i think they wanted to have each person create what the album meant to them.
But im just rambling...

Good review, but I think most will agree when I say that Arpeggi is the obvious standout, brilliant track here. If the marketing campaign stands out more than this beautiful song, I would be very disappointed.
Sometimes you have to let the album simmer for a little while before you decide on the standout track. Just because it doesn't stand out immediately doesn't mean it won't stand out at all. This is especially true with Radiohead. Listening to an album by them is always an overwhelming task at first. Though I must say it was pretty obvious to me pretty quickly...
What I like about them lately, even on "eraser" is that they make you think they are going to hit an overdramatic climax and then they don't...they let you enjoy the rise toward it and then pull the rug out, leaving you with an appreciation for the scenic rive rather than the destination.

there's really no time to absorb an album in 4 hours, half a day or even a week. Sometimes I feel like I never fully absorb albums.

I can disagree with that. My favorite right now is Nude.

Is there anyone here that doesn't like this album? I like it but i find that Hail to the Thief is better.

I was listening to Hail to the Thief today, and while there are some brilliant tracks, it's not as consistent as this album.

It's disappointing, but still tight. It's consistent and all the tracks are great, but it's no on par with the classic Radiohead albums.

And thus it gets a little boring at times. Admittedley the albums not as thrilling as previous releases, but thats not the point, the point is it's still solid.
