@Visions Well loosely using the words of the guy who coined the term and my own, instead of having riffs like normal rock music, the guitar is used to create texture. Rock instruments being used for non rock purposes that also usually focus on building to a crescendo. Doesn't always have to have crescendos because for example, Talk Talk sonically is very texture driven, but more traditional PR normally has build ups to climaxes. Hope that helps you.

@Mongi, fair enough man, I just feel like defining post-rock as post-metal as a genre is so problematic cause bands like Talk Talk and GY!BE are worlds apart

@ Visions And also typically post rock uses lots of piano and strings in their music frequently to add it. And yea they're worlds apart but doesn't mean they're not part of the same genre.

But post metal, haven't got a fucking clue how to describe that haha

Yeah it's hard to describe definitely, I usually just over simplify it by saying it's a metal version of post-rock

If I heard any album I could tell you if it had even a post rock influence, just cos I've had so much experience of the genre, but hell I can't put it into words what defines the genre definitively

Actually, just last weekend I had someone ask me what post metal was and I had a real hard time defining it. I bought some Red Sparowes albums and the cashier asked what they were, and I told her it was instrumental post metal, kinda like Pelican. She just stared at me blankly. So I said, Neurosis, Isis, Cult of Luna? She just shook her head. So eventually I just asked her if she had heard Sigur Ros, which she had. So I told her that that was post rock and post metal is basically post rock but with really sludgy guitars and harsh vox. Way oversimpilified, but it seemed to get the message across well enough I guess.

Lol, yea it's tough describing genres and bands like that to people who don't branch out a lot musically. Surprised she didn't get a look when you said "Isis." Fucking never fails.

People assume I listen to Isis just to be edgy, it's fucking annoying

Yeah, I was kind of expecting her to react to Isis, but she didn't seem completely lucid, so idk.
