Yeah there's literally two different songs on that album called "Toronto". I wish they would've just named the album that.

Shane writes the lyrics and occasionally contributes with some guitar-work, but he is not, nor has ever been, the primary songwriter.

Imagine thinking Shane is the primary songwriter

I have a feeling that the gentleman I was arguing with was equating songwriting to lyric-writing.

Nope, I'm talking music itself too. Not denying he works closely with the lead guitarist, so it's more of a band work, as it should be anyway. But Shane has/had a little solo project running and it still kinda sounds like Silverstein writing wise. When someone pointed that out on facebook Shane replied something akin to "well I guess that's just how I write music". So you telling me the lead guitarist, be it Rosseau now or Boshart in the past, wrote the music for Shanes solo project? Also, how do you know the opposite to be true? On ascap.com several Silverstein songs are noted and while I didn't bother to go through all of them, I didn't find a single one where Shane wasn't credited, but a few where only he was.

In the end it doesn't matter that much to me as long as the music comes from the band members, even better if they work together. But from the info I have Shane is essential to their writing, at least as much as the lead guitarist. Clear me up if there is intel implicating otherwise.

P.S. It's also new to me that they actually kicked Neil out. Seems that they just grew apart and Boshart didn't really contribute that much anymore.

Tbh i think the biggest problem with this is the production. It just sounds so flat and lifeless. Which is weird because Mark Trombino usually gets very rich sounds from his bands

Also yeah Shane is credited with sole songwriting credits on a lot of their songs. So make of that what you will

We're going to have to agree to disagree about the songwriting thing. This has been my favorite band for thirteen years, and I've read/watched countless interviews over the years where they have repeatedly stated that the songwriting is collaborative effort, and have owned all of the CDs in the first half of their discography in which Boshart (along with Told) are credited with the songwriting in the booklets. The band became noticably less heavy and more melodically-driven after Rescue (which was their last album with Boshart excluding Short Songs), and I don't see that as mere coincidence if Shane is the main songwriter, as you say. I do see, however, that according to Wikipedia, Shane holds the entirety of the songwriting credit for I Am Alive, which if true, would mean that Rosseau has had less of a hand in the songwriting process than I previously thought since joining the band. But still, even in Shane's Lead Singer Syndrome podcast, he has stated on a few episodes that what he does for the band is write the lyrics and occasionally help with guitar-work, which I stated a couple pages ago on this thread.

In the end most of it seems to be joint work, which is better anyway.

For me, about half of this is solid, a couple of songs are decent, and then there are 4 songs I do not like.

I used to have this at a 2, and then I went back through a while back and found a few more things worth revisiting and decided to bump it.
