I feel like I sort of just worked up to it. You go through a few classics like Transilvanian Hunger, Graveforest and Their Shadows, Nattens Madrigal and suddenly this stuff doesn't seem like as big of a stretch as it used to

wow really? de mysteriis dom sathanas (sp????) is one of my favorite bm albums (out of the admittedly small sample of bm that I've heard)

Tbh Mayhem and Emperor (gasp) still haven't clicked with me the way I feel they should as a BM fan. I enjoy both but never actually want to listen to either over so many other bands

Mayhem never got to record anything of value with their 'classic' lineup. DMDS is not the album that it could have been and that has always rankled me. Attila was great with Tormentor but I hated him with Mayhem and he just didn't do the album justice the way Dead would have. Not to mention DMDS is the only Mayhem album even worth talking about.
They're propped up by their mythology more than their music.
Emperor on the other hand, just blows.

definitely jam Winterkaelte. It's still really static-y but much less "knives in ears" and more "windy". I don't really like this album for the same reason, but some of the others are great.
