Yeah I'd say it's a weird anomaly where it's basically everything they'd worked on previously perfected and also its own thing entirely

Count the Mark Hollis solo album into that. You're right though and it's really fascinating

This is more aesthetically pure definitely, I wasn't arguing otherwise. But it is that very 80s pop sensibility / finesse that adds a layer of sheen to Spirit of Eden that I like so much

Spirit of Eden feels like their 80s pop identity is melting and twisting and taking on new shapes in real time, where on this the detachment or transition or whatever has already taken place. This is further out in space, but I slightly prefer the album which shows the take off ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I find this superior to Spirit of Eden, though SoE is obviously a masterpiece as well. I prefer the "purity" or slight lack of polish of this one. This album is like nature - unpredictable, beautiful, threatening, peaceful, balanced, spiritual, familiar yet infinitely unknowable. Spirit of Eden is of course sublime, but, with the exclusion of "The Rainbow" perhaps, it doesn't quite evoke that same feeling in me. Plus, this album feels more like a single continuous experience, a trip through the different moods of nature, whereas Spirit of Eden has two distinct halves, with the first being more like this, but the second half is more song-based. It feels wrong to listen to a song from this without the other ones to complement it (although I do admit that from every now and then I go for "New Grass" on its own) - less so with Spirit of Eden, or the second half of it at least.

Well said, though I think After The Flood works well on its own

"Yeah I'd say it's a weird anomaly where it's basically everything they'd worked on previously perfected and also its own thing entirely" Sums up my feelings. Yet at the same time I am in denial. That is the only thing keeping me from 5ing this. I plan on listening to the two albums back to back some time this week. I presume Laughing stock will top SOE.

I can get behind that. It's certainly the perfect way to end this album.
