I avoided this album for a long time due to its length, I finally gave it a listen today and forgot how much I loved it.
"Teeth Like Gods Shoeshine" "Doin the Cockroach and "Trailer Trash" are Modest Mouse classics. Although some tracks tend to drag on bit the album is brought back up by some of it's excellent moments. I consider this the best Modest Mouse album, it's more hard rocking and adrenaline pumping then The Moon and Antarctica and there are to many poopy tracks on This is a Long Drive....

i grew up in oregon but moved down to california 7 years ago. i stopped listening to rock/alt/indie around that time, figuring the entire genre was in a cul-de-sac (at least stuck somewhere in a really lame suburb).
my brother has been telling me to listen to modest mouse for years. i'd been ignoring him, assuming that they were just another whiny, pretentious seattle band. another friend from home brought this album down a few months ago.
i can't stop listening to it. i feel like i'm back home. that whole rainy-trailer-park/washed-out-farm/dead-logging-mill thing.
obviously i'm way late in having any sort of opinion, and not qualified since i don't give a damn about most rock bands. but you all got to admit that these guys kept it real here, they captured the feel of the pacific northwest. most art tries and fails to do that sort of thing.

What's wrong with his lisp?
Eliminator has a good opinion on this album.

AMAZING album. Great vocals, lyrics, and all the sone structures and jamming parts of the album are killer. Pretty much the best album modest mouse ever did.

After hearing it I put this on with haste.

Wow, I picked this up not expecting anything much different from GNFPWLBN, but I was wrong by a long shot. Trailer Trash, Teeth Like God's Shoeshine, and Cowboy Dan are pretty much great.

Doin' the Cockaroach is one of my favorites. As is this album which I listen to almost everyday, especially on drives. It has a certain atmosphere that I can connect to and one that I can't resist. Some songs drag a bit (especially Trucker's Atlas which I've only listen to all the way through twice) but overall it's an outstanding effort. I do agree with you on that you need to aquire a taste for it to really enjoy it. I had to listen to it a lot-- and changing up my favorite songs constantly-- before loving it the way I do. I started with The Moon and Antartica and switched over to Good News for People Who Love Bad News. You can guess how suprised I was when I put in Lonesome Crowded West into my CD player and having that hectic guitar line and manic singing fill up my car. Give it time and keep an open mind. This Message Edited On 09.16.07

oh man, this album is great for a listen once in a while. I wish it did without a couple of those middle tracks though, maybe it would even be a 5 then.

"Teeth Like God's Shoeshine" and "Cowboy Dan" are just incredible. I wish their new stuff was half as good or raw as this.

Cowboy Dan is the best song on the Album, Great Album

Good review, and I'm downloading the album right now.
Just for the record, and I know I'm being anal-retentive, you had a line towards the beginning about the complexities of life in postmodern American society. You then said Radiohead and Pink Floyd both made albums on this subject. They're both British. Just a little thing, but one that seemed to get stuck in my head.

"Lounge" = best Modest Mouse song. I like what you said about "Trucker's Atlas;" that song bores the hell out of me.

Yea I agree completely. Great album. Like just so good. After first couple listens I think 'Cowboy Dan' is my favorite, but most of the songs are top notch.

Seminal album; fitting review.
I'm loving the whole musician's outlook to the whole thing.
What a good album though (and a great review also)
