Hell yeah, just saw them with Pantera this past weekend. They killed it, obviously. That was like the 8th or 9th time I've seen them, so no surprise there but still

"But yeah, there’s really no reason to go past Sacrament (or even this) for anything but the Superfan"

Highly accurate. Their first handful of albums just hit different for some reason. I can't quite put my finger on it but something in their sound shifted after Sacrament.

I saw them live in 2018 and they absolutely killed it. Was also gonna go see them with Pantera but it was like 100 degrees and it was outside so I passed lmao.

Hundred degrees is nothing. Living in Arizona 100 is like beautiful spring weather lol

Metalphil - it was the production that changed

The first few albums were raw af especially Palaces which Devin Townsend recorded for them but from the second Walk With Me In Hell drops you can feel how shiny and perfect it sounds and it doesn’t suit them quite as much imo

That eastern humidity is definitely nothing to mess with. I love the heat but when you toss humidity in the mix it can really suck ass. Even the a/c can't save you. Idk why people in Florida even bother with towels. It's a shower that never ends.

I usually prefer a cleaner production on metal albums but I'll admit the rawness on those first few albums really worked extremely well for them.

I don't think it was just the production that changed though... The riffs just aren't there like they used to be.

Ashes in the Wake is my favorite modern metal production full stop. Fucking perfection to me.

I agree they changed after Sacrament, but Wrath was still quite good. Fully believe it was Mark's rock influence taking over, and Chris' voice being heard less and less. When they stopped sounding dark and eerie, all their intensity disappeared.

Each album has a couple killer songs though, nothing is even bad...just a bit meh.

"I honestly feel that we're committing genocide over here
I don't believe in killing civilians
And I'm not gonna kill civilians for the United States Marine Corps"

The interview samples throughout Ashes of the Wake, does anyone know if they're from an actual interview? Everything I see on Google just leads back to the song itself.

“Favourite modern metal production”

How long til these guys aren’t “modern metal” any more? In a few years there’ll be just as much distance between Sabbath’s first album and LoG’s as there is between LoG’s first album and the current day.

Yeah It's an interesting question.

I don't think metal has had a real shift since the millenium when Nu-metal jumped the shark and NWOAHM took over. It's probably not, if you ask others, but in my mind this and maybe two or three other albums around that time (Ascendency, Ghost Reveries) that captivated us all really felt like a reset button had been pressed.

The existential horror of realizing this is nearly twenty years old when twenty years old still makes me think of classic rock is almost as bad as realizing that we're still waiting for the next big thing to move metal forward. If Sabbath was the Magic / Larry era, Maiden / Priest was our MJ, then the millenium shift I'm talking about was like Kobe and Tim Duncan. What sucks is....we're still waiting for our LeBron. I thought for a moment that Ghost or even Sleep Token might have been it, but clearly that's not the case.

That's a silly analogy, but hopefully my point gets across.

The big moment for me is still in Break You when they transition back to the opening riff before the finale. Like...holy fuck.

Yeah that's so sick. First time a band has used the first riff at the end of a song before like, holy fuck!

Omerta is prob my favorite here right now. Used to be Hourglass, at one point it was Now You've Got Something to Die For, at one point it was Faded Line
