Correct el_newg. The forest for the trees was that of all the new stuff that was coming out in metal in 1992 I’d say Pantera had the biggest impact. That was my experience

Nah zak, it's still a problem and i can tell stuff like this had a ripple effect. so did certain other macho hypermasculine cultures. But you just know Anselmo and co. with their 90s mentalities would be quick as hell to call the 00s emo scene, especially the bands that found their way in the metal(core) scene, a bunch of homophobic slurs.

Hell, Phil Labonte, who was part of the same scene as bands like A7X and BFMV, follows that same train of thought that Anselmo used to, and what did he call BVB back in 2012? Oh yeah that's right!

I was taking the piss mate.

All that outrage, ‘wokeness’ and ‘positive discrimination’ has pushed us back about 50yrs (some would argue on purpose) rather than moved anything forward.

Honestly i'm more in favor of us not treating the scene as something that needs to be inherently anything in terms of the arbitrary gender paradigm. let women be badasses if they desire, let men be sensitive if they're not fit to be badasses, and for the love of god let people of other races get a chance without being immediately labeled slurs.

I never felt comfy with the idea that because I was born a dude I needed to be some gun-toting hillbilly that shamed other guys for crying. it was part of the multiple reasons I now am trans. there's other things but a big one was not wanting to have to deal with that expectation anymore. didn't really work, but at least i'm learning more about myself.

I just took the piss out of it. The whole confederate flag waving, gun toting thing is what it is.

The UK equivalent was the NF or BNP back then now there’s all sorts springing up mostly affiliated to young football ‘hooligans’ who haven’t the first fucking clue. All false bravdo and wanting to be a part of something that died out as a result of massive societal and ergonomical factors.

Absolutely soft as shite and not to be taken that seriously. Fuck ‘em.

And if anyone takes exception pull their hair and scratch their eyes out

That'll do it. Pantera definitely paved the way for 5FDP and the likes to be even more fake.

surely 'real men' (whatever the fuck that means) shouldn't be afraid to cry, I mean what's more badass than balling your eyes out at a truckers convention and giving no shits? (*insert other 'manly' activity, idk what these people do!)

Seriously tho, I despised a lot of that stuff growing up. There does appear to be a movement now towards being whoever tf you want to be, regardless of your assigned gender and ultimately, I can't see that freedom of choice (at its core) being anything but a positive development

My wife works at a school and she’d definitely say there are ’some difficulties’ with it (understatement)

In the UK they still don’t have a clue how to legislate it really, quite a mess

All research says the forming teenage brain works in a different way and is hyper sensitive and aligned to making decisions based on perceived peer pressure. It’s a worry.

100% predicted that comment Doof, it's why I added '(at its core)' - I don't wish to debate that side of things

If you look at the pool of evidence on other decisions kids make at school the conclusion is they make some really fucking dumb decisions - their decisions on identity could be the exception and totally infallible…but that would seem unlikely, you would expect a similar hit rate maybe

I'm not naïve enough to believe everything is rosy and kids obviously need protecting, especially the younger ones who's idea of themselves and the world around them is very much still in the earlier stages of development

but yeah, give me that utopia (because fortunately I don't have to worry about any of the practicalities!)

In terms of Pantera and their perceived audience/message...well my buddy at university was an Irish asian lad and he said 'no way' to see them, and we were generally people who would run headfirst into anything with a hint of danger about it.

He said the gig was such a likely magnet for racists/white supremacists and even if not then you'd get some brand of knucklehead. I was gutted but I respected it enough not to try and change his mind about it.

Because he was so tall (about 6'6) he'd get a lot of people randomly square up to him, people would guess his nationality and call him a 'fucking turk' or a p'ki or whatever - if he thought it'd be a whole gig of those types of interactions I could get why he'd swerve it.

So this is why Doof never got to watch Pantera.

@Demon: facts tbh, live and let live, arbitrary standards of what i should and shouldn't act like based on my assigned gender always got to me. even when i couldn't bring myself to admit i'm trans i always hated that kind of judgment.

the funny part is how when i came out the same mfers who were trying to revoke my "man card' wanted to force it back the second I revoked it from myself.

Vlac - those days I wouldn’t have gone on my own no, and I wouldn’t have known anyone else who’d have wanted to go to a metal gig then unfortunately. Couple of years later I knew loads of people who listened to metal and went to shows

Tbh I don’t think I’d have enjoyed going on my own too much, though I have now been to a few shows on my own in adulthood because I realise it can be your one chance
