You'll be excused for that, don't worry.

"The Grand Conjuration is eternal only in the sense that it seems to go on and on forever." [2]
The first half of that song is like the best thing on here but they really should have cut it short

I was hoping that the radio edit would do that but it didn't

So true

I'll have to disagree. On other songs, maybe. But on this one? I like it taking it's time to end.
|

lol, out of all the songs on here The Grand Conjuration is easily the most guilty of being much longer than it's worth.

Half of the songs here drag unfortunately, otherwise this would be a possible contender for their best

Their best? Even with shorter songs, it actually repeats their formula, so I don't think people would consider this to be their best. If it came before BP or SL.... maaayyybbeeee....

Repeats their formula? This is one of if not the most diverse album they've ever done. And it's easily in their top 5 if not top 3

top 5 def. Top 3? Hmmm, BWP, SL... maybeeee.... I'm not saying no but I can't say yes either.

And they do repeat their formula. A certain formula, anyway. Transition from harsh to gentle and from mellow to extreme, thematology, lenghty songs and technicality. It's a kind o fformula isn't it?

"Dr. Who"
OOOOOOH, well that explains why I was drawing a blank. :-P

@Myth: I don't really see how that's different from any band, how can anyone release more than one or two albums without some kind of formula? And I would say this is definitely top 5 with BWP, SL, MAYH, and MR. Probably 3rd place, with BWP first ofc.

Diverse? Sure. Beautiful? You bet. But it's not daring. Deliverance suffered from the same thing and this is the reason it's not as loved as others. It had all Opeth elements but nothing new. Same with this one. All Opeth. It takes all their elements and mixes them professionaly, crafting something truly spectacular. But there's no NEW element in this, neither in Watershed (well, maybe it was more stripped down and a bit more bluesy, but that's another concept). What differentiates this from Deliverance and makes it brilliant is that, even with the same recipe, it remains fresh and glorious.

baying of the Hounds and GC don't follow that formula. If anything, BWP is their most formulaic

This lessens a lot of the acoustic elements and has a lot more new prog influence and clean singing, you're ignoring a lot of these kinds of changes as well as what I said earlier about how diverse and melodic it is. Also Deliverance brought a lot of new ideas to their sound, a lot of people just didn't like it because those new ideas happened to involve a much more prevalent melodeath influence, but it still has plenty of clean sections, some of their best.

Indeed, we see a lot less acoustic parts. When you say diverse, I get that, from their work and influences,
this is the most balanced, so maybe there's where we disagree. As for Deliverance, I always thought of it as
a safe album. Heavy intro, mellow section, heavy intro, mellow section, solo, heay, heavy, heavy (note: each
section is x4). We hear piano, that's for sure.

People can say Blackwater Park is their masterpiece till they're blue in the face, I still will always prefer this over it.
