So is this better than average or is it a staff pick because you find it better than alot of other albums?
I'm going with that the album is really excellent. Jared and Nick's picks have really been good to me. I'm goint to keep checking in on their picks.

I staff picked just because it is an enjoyable album.. Just not a GREAT album.

The main problem with this record is that it has 'The Birth and Death of a Day' as it's opener.
|
| |
I seriously think that's the best song they've recorded.

I heartily disagree, Luck. Though its replay value isn't as great as Cold Dead Place, I still love listening to it.

This is my first Explosions album, and I have to say that I'm really impressed. I was going to purchase " The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place" but a friend of mine bought this one first and he gave me a copy. I am really enjoying it; very good to drive to on those nights when you just need to take a drive by yourself.

Great album, despite hearing nothing new I still feel full after listing to this great addition to the Explosions in the Sky Disography.

Excellent drummer, other than that, simply an average album

this album has gone up alot in my estimation as time has gone on, it's still a very enjoyable record, just less cohesive as the others.

I had listened to this a few times and enjoyed it, but then I got it on vinyl yesterday and the first listen blew me away, I think this really is an excellent album.

From the looks of most comments this is not a popular opinion, but this kills all their other stuff (which I still love by the way). This album is so easy to sit through at pretty much any time, which is usually the one downside to a lot of similar music. Don't get me wrong I love bands like Godspeed You! and Neurosis (one of my absolute favorites) etc, but can't always find the time to sit through an entire record. I found "The Earth..." a little less enjoyable than this but still overall solid, but seriously this slays any of their other stuff!

Finally got this today. Really liking what I've heard so far but nothing has really made me go, "Holy shit that was awesome" yet.

The Birth and Death of the Day is their best song yet!

It's Natural to Be Afraid is punishingly deep, bout half the songs on this are brilliant, the others, not so much.
