Keep in mind that those guys were younger than him so they looked up to him like some kind of leader of the scene. Varg was probably the only person at that time who didn't buy into Euronymous's persona and his satanic/anti-society shtick.

Euronymous' value to the underground metal scene of the 80s and 90s was immeasurable, and were it not for him, game-changing zines like Slayer mag might not even have existed. Dude promoted so many obscure bands from across the world, helped pioneer an infant genre, and basically invented the second wave almost single-handedly. Varg kinda just followed along.

Euronymous didn't need anyone to hype him, his legacy hyped itself.
