Album screams Cobain. Theres a reason that Celebrity Skin sounded entirely different than this.

I really hate this bullshit that "Oh Cobain wrote this obviously" even though no one has ever once said he even co-wrote any of the music. The lyrics on this are so blatantly and uniquely from a woman's perspective and have no similarity to Kurt's writing style at all. Both Violet and Doll Parts were already written and being performed in early versions as early as 91, when Kurt and Courtney barely knew each other. And the argument "Well look at how different Celebrity Skin is", yeah, it's called progression, the same way this album is very different from Pretty On the Inside. There is a very clear and obvious poppier progression from early Hole to their later stuff, a very common theme in many band's music, especially those that start off playing very aggressive music. Here's a wild idea: maybe it utilizes the same grunge pop songwriting dynamics from Nevermind because they were fuckin' married and were known to be creatively competitive? No shit she was influenced in a major way by Kurt's songwriting, but to just dismiss her and Eric as if they didn't write this album is so disrespectful and dumb and has no basis in reality other than people just trying to find an excuse to write off Courtney's creativity because people don't like her personally. Hell I don't like her personally, but this is her album through and through and it's lazy and stupid to just go "lol nah she sucks Kurt obv wrote this".

Or, the simpler version. They lived together. Jammed together a lot. Its pretty obvious he had something to do with it.

Also, I think its a great album, hence the 4.5, and the fact I bought it in 1994. But yeah, he is all over this record.

I mean by that logic Courtney had something to do with In Utero. I mean you're bein a bit vague with that comment, cause of course he had something to do with it, he clearly influenced her songwriting hardcore and that's totally understandable and fine, but there's just zero evidence at all that he wrote any of those songs and one of the songs you referenced (Violet) was written and being performed when Kurt and Courtney had only met once or twice and hadn't even begun dating yet.

I railed against Courtney for yyyeeeaaaarrrssss but I have to come to her defense on this album. These songs are waaaaay too feminine to be from the mind of Kurt. Lyrics are nothing like his style at all, and when this album was being recorded Kurt's music was totally different. This album worships at the altar of Nevermind's songwriting, whereas Kurt distinctly shifted into way more aggressive and non-pop songwriting with In Utero. I've never liked Courtney as a person and probably never will, but I just find it really cruel and disrespectful to just write off this album as "Oh well uh Kurt wrote a bunch of it obviously". There are so many reasons to shit on Courtney but that's not one of them.

(no disrespect brotha i love you bighans riff city for life, i've been digging hard on your greatest riffs list lately)

"Album screams Cobain. Theres a reason that Celebrity Skin sounded entirely different than this." [2]

this is Kurt's creation and is the reason why this album is as awesome as it is, i don't care for anything else by this band.

I've never listened to a full Hole album, and I never plan on it unless they cut Love's royalties from Spotify streaming.
