My coworker who hates prog metal enjoyed it so that's worth something I suppose

Also I just realized this and There Will Be Fireworks in one year is probably making Mongi the happiest man to ever walk the Earth lol

Yeah new album rules. They definitely didn’t make the same album twice. I will say that some of the singers feel a bit out of place and Watch The Earth Sink has a long buildup to….chugggs?? Idk that just rubbed me the wrong way. Very little pat off for such a long song. I felt like All We Ever Knew And Loved has song writing that’s frustrating and all over the place. But overall it’s a wild ride.

Wasn't completely on point with this record either in songwriting regard, but with given time I've come to enjoy it more and more. Let's see if the new one is as much of a grower, haven't heard it yet.

Oh it definitely has some bangers. Let The Truth Speak blew me away. Daniel fits right at home with this band. Plus the opener and Daniels Aria are amazing.

I really dig it on a second listen. Not sure all the buildups are paid off perfectly tbf, I guess that's a result of overthinking this record? 8 years is too long for any record. Still really love it

General thoughts while I revisit this album vs. new

New album is far more spectacle-driven but the build-ups aren't quite there, or there are a lot of attempts at them whereas the debut tends to be structured around one gradual pay-off. Makes that eventual release feel special and it expands upon all that preceded it, whereas the newer approach is kinda overblown/exhausting in comparison.

That spectacle-driven approach leaves less room for subtlety, and while the band certainly loves having this cinematic scope to things, their ability to quiet things down is a strength. Debut knows when to restrain itself; new alb flaunts a bit too much.

Related to that, the songwriting feels less cohesive, with transitions to those more reserved moments seeming more arbitrary in relation to what's around it.

"Pattern Of Rebirth" is an outright dud.

Far from a bad album and I'll likely try it again--"Tyranny" is a great track where it seems this more grandiose direction clicks--but it's a step down in my estimation.

The closer is strangely…bad. It is explodes to great emotional affect in the first two minutes then abruptly quiets down to almost nothing for like the next four minutes making me say “wait what the fuck?!” Then when it finally gets to a payoff I’m already sort of too frustrated to enjoy it lol

Other than Watch The Earth Sinks lack of a meaningful payoff too and The Lesser Evil being kinda weird I loved every other aspect of the album. 4/5 it’s just very uneven.

I agree the closer isn't really great. I didn't really like it as a single, but I guess I just got used to it at some point and hoped it would work better in the album context, but I guess it doesn't
