I had a long comment that mobile Sputnik deleted. But Sade’s lead-in is perfect. I feel that “expressing the inexpressible” vibe in the wordless yelps of el DeBarge on “time will reveal,” acknowledge and dig the arch conceptual catchiness of mmj’s “wordless chorus” and the-dream’s “falsetto,” really love the devolutions of words into mouth-sound versions of themselves on “ghost town” by Kanye west (shouts Ty) and “please go easy with me” by the Sierra Leonean artist s.e. Rogie (sampled horrifyingly on that 2019 vampire weekend album), and then the further modifications of lots of modern hip hoppers—but I dunno if anyone had such a genius idea as to work their way into the wordless expressionism with a phrase as “leading” (the wordlessness seems to “answer” or finish the prior phrase…) and “general” (…but maybe the two could be unyoked) as “when I laid eyes on you”. The immediate interpretation I have moves me—that she as an artist found a formal sleight of hand to call to mind past and present, that her wordlessness is both what it is as a piece of music (so beautiful, so present) and standing for something else (the wordlessness the narrator once experienced in seeing this person), killing two birds with one stone, musical form as narrative palimpsest…but I also think warmly on the idea, really the image, of necessity opposed to that first one, of her breaking off from the thought, lost in a state of daydreaming, so happy and in love, a melody from her deep past suddenly as if out of nowhere entering her head, pleading to be sung…

No matter how much you like this as a 19 yo, only after living a while it starts to HIT you. Hard. And you feel that bittersweetness only adulthood brings.
