Over the last decade I’ve come back to this record every couple of years and it’s grown on me more every time. I find it very peculiar though, because on paper I’d eat this up but it just never resonated with me on a deeper level. In a way it’s gained my respect as something that’s somewhat courted me into admiring it over time. Usually when something doesn’t click after a couple tries i leave it at that and don’t like to force it upon myself and conclude it’s just not going to go there for me. But there was always something in me that wanted to give this another try because I really like F# and Slow Riot, and after what must be like, my 20th listen, I can say I really like this now. My initial sentiment as Sleep being the strongest portion of this still stands though

This is the musical equivalent of all those videos about the best acting performances and all of them are white guys yelling

marlon brando invented acting and he did it without yelling! (on the contrary, actually; he was a mumbler.)

My new partner had never heard of Godspeed before, which kinda surprised me given her music savvy, so I explained them to her as "Explosions in the Sky but Trump-era dread." Which sure, it works. And she got it. And we're going to see them live. But here I am listening to the first six minutes of "Storm" for the first time in a while and I want to eat my words. This is gorgeous. There's joy in it

there has always been some element of hope to their music
very few post-rock bands have the subtlety, depth or genuine emotion that gy!be have had

GAH when the brass hits I feel something very specific, very sublime, its one of those little moments that kicks things into the stratosphere but with restraint, holy shit it's the lil miracles like that that redeem this genre for me

Yep, this is one of those creeper 5s for me. It took a decade, but it's never leaving my top 20. Ever.
