In comparison this album has too many hard turns in pacing and elaborate instrumental and even vocal sections so yeah that's alt metal, borderline progressive rock

There are a few main sub-branches of nu-metal. There's the melodic and shoegazy one that Deftones spearheaded, the rhythmically unconventional, groovy one that Korn spearheaded, and the rap-fusion one that was jointly spearheaded by Limp Bizkit and Korn. Early Drowning Pool and Evanescence were the shoegazy branch, Slipknot a combination of the rhythmic and rap branches with a thrash infusion and early Linkin Park a mix of all three with a heavier rap leaning.

This album has unconventional rhythms and pseudo-rap elements, which make it at least adjacent to nu-metal, but still primarily alt metal. I consider the band overall to be alt metal with thrash and mu-metal influences.

I think nu metal is like limp bizkit or linkin park. Rap elements & electronics are pretty much necessary. Korn tends to qualify too, but it's more vague in their case IMO, they might as well be called alt

Metalheads calling any nu metal they think is actually good "alt metal" is such a reliable cope that you could set your clock to it. The more things change eh
