I love the lyrics of shanty
“there once was a ship that put to sea, the name of the ship was the billy o’tea”

Shanty is the best thing this band has done since the 90’s. If everything here were as good as shanty this would be an easy 5

I’m failing to see it

Yeah, this is definitely at least good. I’m struggling to be quite as enthused as some of y’all but it’s a step in the right direction for sure…
It feels like something I throw on whenever and have at worst a pleasant enough experience

Shanty is v good and a) the only real shoegaze song here (not an issue) and b) one of very few songs that transcends an above-average take on the comatose Cigarettes After Sex morass that captures everything mediocre about contemp dream pop
Slowdive are still one of the best bands of their kind and you can hear their talent here, but I will not be taking any pointers on dreamgaze from anyone who thinks this sound shows them at their best. Y'all are listless pushovers

Nah this is about on par with Antisocialites and Blue Rev buries reunion-era Slowdive in general. Songwriting and balance of energy levels on that record are absurd

Ya cheeky bugger

The last one had two big highlights (Slomo and Don't Know Why) where this only has one - this might be the better album song for song tbh but I'm struggling to feel a strong preference

Blue Rev continuing to filter the torpid crowd who can't handle jangle, shifts of tone or actual subtle narrative in their shoegaze we love to see it
Keep your stodgy comfort music
|
| |
Album Rating: 3.5
their is no subtlety behind the obnoxious jangle, just accept it and stop pretending it's something it's not
also blue rev has some of the most annoying vocal inflections ever
|
| |
Album Rating: 3.5
There is a ton of subtlety in the way half the songs on that album are constructed to take one or two single instances of unrepeated vocal inflections as their emotional centre and subsequently open up across further listens, and if you couldn't make it past the Voice (not a complaint I've ever seen for that alb) that's your skill issue. Album is insanely tightly written

Album Rating: 3.5
yes but I don't like vocal centric albums and you know it
makes it even worse if I don't enjoy the vocals and the music is vocal centric
the only thing that could be worse are lyric centric albums
|
| |
Album Rating: 3.5
Not hot take = Blue Rev is the least vocal-centric Alvvays album (even if the vocals are still integral) and the density of those arrangements is another common filter for stodgy melody+reverb gazeheads
