This is such a morning album. I don't have anything to back that up, but it just feels like one to me.

Maybe it's the cover Sowing?

A lot of the music definitely is less dark than their previous couple of albums, so that may be the other thing, I can see it

goodsite, I wouldn't say it has anything like those 2 songs specifically, but there are definitely excellent songs here and it's still a PT album so it's not gonna be completely unfamiliar

That could be it. All I know is I listened to it on my morning commute to work yesterday and today and there's something about it that's just fitting for that moment.

I'm not a PT diehard by any stretch, but I've been listening to In Absentia and Deadwing for something like twelve years now and am also a big fan of (most of) Steven Wilson's solo work. I say this knowing it's my relative inexperience with PT's greater discography doing the talking, but to me this is right on par with the two aforementioned works and all of Wilson's stuff. This is remarkably consistent, very mellow and experimental, and has a certain charm/welcoming nature. My expectations were tempered coming in, because I knew it was essentially one of those dreaded "reunion albums", but I think they really nailed this and it far surpassed all of my expectations.

Listen to pre-Stupid Dream PT, most of the best stuff is there. Would agree that this is more or less on par with IA though

I love almost everything from Signify to the later releases, definitely one of my favorite bands, and I don't know where to put this yet

I know I love Of The New Day about as much as any song they've done, the rest of the album hasn't yet sat with me and I haven't given it enough time

I'm glad you're liking it though, hopefully I share your sentiments soon enough

Not the biggest fan of IA though

i think Of The New Day isn't really interesting or groundbreaking, but it's somehow growing on me. I guess it feels the most like a cohesive song, the other songs not as much.

I'm also surprised by all the negative/indifferent comments on IA tbh. It's a record that grew on me a lot

It's just a damn good song and sometimes that's enough

as for IA, I love a lot of the songs from there and dislike only a couple but as a whole it drags for me and isn't as easily relistenable like most of their other ones

It may be cliche to say, but In Absentia is their best and one of my all time favorite albums. The Sky Moves Sideways and Stupid Dream are close though, so yes their pre-metal albums are essential listens.

Even tho this is more consistently chill than those, there isn't even one song you could call a ballad all the way through, like Lazarus, My Ashes, Glass Arm Shattering, Sentimental, .3, Lay-by... one or two of those kinds of songs would've been nice.

Not sure the otherwise tranquil The New Day even needs that distorted guitar in the second half. If they make another album I'd like if they lessened the metal even more.

I would be happy with an album full of songs like Lazarus if there is enough variety of course. I don't really care about the heavy moments here and I definitely miss the melodies ... damn, I think I'll bump this down to a 3.0

It's good, but doesn't do much for me

"are there any songs like blind house or fear of a blank planet on it"
no, not really. herd culling might be the closest to any of their recent stuff like that.

"If they make another album I'd like if they lessened the metal even more."
Lightbulb Sun is one of my favorites and it's not metal at all, but it also has a very genuine and personal feel to it while this doesn't.

Thanks Storm!

Not completely true Uber, the bridge of Hatesong and second half of Russia on Ice brings on the metal.

Lovely album tho, if only Burning New Soul and Cure for Optimism were on there instead of Four Chords then it would be perfect.

Wilson is quite arrogant isn't he, love his music but his ego is massive.

Why does it make him a douche or arrogant to be thanking his fans for his success

^^ Yeah wtf lol. Dude has an ego but he’s upfront about it. And he’s always expressed nothing but gratitude for his fans, support, and success. I think he’s just more open/honest about it than most artists which people don’t like
