Sometimes too much maybe... like during that two-chord progression accompanied by guitar melody in the middle of the song. Still, more of the same isn't a bad thing in this case.

my vinyl copy of this just came in. probably the most elaborate packaging ive ever seen
|

but did it come with ammonite fossils like The Ocean's last two?

The Ocean packages are top notch. Of all the music I've bought I think only A Forest of Stars tops The Ocean package material wise

I'd agree but the last two forest of stars albums were very dull

I loved their last two! The Collector's edition content of Grave Mounds added a lot to the atmosphere.

I'm really into this one, hits on everything I like about Cult of Luna, reminds me of their earlier stuff.

Undoubtedly my favorite band of all time at this point. I keep worrying about the law of diminishing returns, but they keep producing great music. While not up there wjth Highway, Salvation, Mariner and Vertikal, a COL album of a 4/5 is still amazing at this point.

“The response to The long road north is… I don’t know how to describe it other than overwhelming. My inboxes has been overflowing with nice people saying nice things. This coincided with my life being totally clogged with work, kids and general life stuff so don’t feel bad if I don’t respond or just respond very short. I want you all to know that it means everything for us and it means everything for me. Thank you.” - J S Persson
Btw there’s a good overview of each CoL album on bandcamp, with some details I wasn’t aware of:

I must be the only one that thinks Vertikal is *the slightest bit* overrated. Though still fantastic, it's easily on the bottom of their discog for me.

Mariner is the overrated one. Vertikal slaps, I The Weapon is so fucking good.

Also, I love the guitar tone on Vertikal, I don't think I've heard any other album that sounds quite like it

Weapon is my favorite Cult of Luna song.

Vertikal is dope, couple of lulls but really great stuff otherwise. Read on the Bandcamp link someone kindly dropped last page that they played it entirely in downstrokes, which I guess explains the guitars somewhat. Can really see that for shit like the Mute Dept chorus

Gonna have to agree there that Mariner is overrated. If I could I’d prob rate it at a 3.7-3.8 area. The band rules but Christmas really brings it down it some points. A Greater Call is stunning though.
