Really, Sowing? You're in for a good ride then, they have at least 4 albums that are objectively better than this .

Metal used to be something like 10% of my pie chart way back in the day (pre-2010), but I really got away from anything that wasn't indie/folk related and just started to listen to more metal again in 2021 (in large part thanks to Dvne, Ethereal Shroud, and Mastodon). Anyway, this strikes a nice balance between power and melody, and I can see the band has an extensive discography, so I just might check out some of their highest rated LPs when this one has run its course.

'Tales From the Thousand Lakes is where you should begin'
For a new person hearing Halo as their first amorphis venture, i disagree Tales should be where to begin.
You need to remember it now has a bit of an old school sound to it, new fans probably have moved on from that style, its mid 90's, we who grew up with it love it, but when making recommendations to people you sometimes do need to consider the context of where this person might be approaching from.
Maybe they aren't a more old school metal type person, maybe they are, i think the recommendation of tales is fine if you qualify it with a comment like - its a more old school metal sound, but just as is, i think it could be a misleading recommendation, almost representing what amorphis are these days, which is what the newbie has just come to discover.
Anyway, ive often thought sometimes people just recommend their favourite albums of bands which of course is understandable, but it just hasn't considered the context.
I often recommend albums to people that aren't my favourite, but if they are a new comer to heavy music for example, i might instead suggest they try a mellower album from a heavy band as a gateway album etc - just as an example

Also to add to the above, if i come across a new fan who has just discovered the latest album, i often suggest they check out the back catalogue in reverse order. Its still a voyage of the bands career just in reverse, but you still get an appreciation of their evolution etc.
I did this with Rush a few years ago when i got snakes and arrows as my first rush album and liked it, i then bought every one but in reverse order. It was a very cool exercise i thought.

I have only heard AM Universum. Please tell me the same singer is on this one?

"I have only heard AM Universum. Please tell me the same singer is on this one?"
The singer on AM Universum departed after their next album Far From The Sun. The vocalist on this album (and all albums since Eclipse) is much better though. Elegy is a must-check if you like those vocals though.
Also I agree with cageofman, this and Tales are very disconnected.

>this and Tales are very disconnected.
This is true to some extent, but melody and the music concept of everything they made afterwards has roots in TftTL.
Tales is the most important album in their disco, it was and still remains a revolutionary metal album. If it's the best is a matter of opinion.

Completely agree it's a landmark album (not my favourite, but can appreciate its significance), but it's not something I would signpost somebody to if they've only heard this album. Maybe the cream of their most recent sound would be more appropriate before exploring what the making of this band was/is.

Best I could find was that he's in a band called Ajattara these days. No idea if they're any good though.

After an exhaustive discog run from Karelian to here, I've come to the conclusion that this holds up. Not my favourite release by them but is definitely up in the top tier, somewhere just behind Skyforger and Eclipse and probably equal(ish) with Silent Waters & Under The Red Cloud.
An absurd level of consistency achieved yet somehow rarely falling into the tired 'we've heard this all before but better' routine veteran bands can get into.
Has neatly slotted into the #3 spot on my AOTY 2022 list. 4.2
