"Also, I'm thinking that of course it's their longest album, because it might be their last... It's the longest shadow in their dayscography, leading into night...."

Punthodea strikes! Yeah there's lots of symbolism regarding 13 as well, but God I sincerely hope not. This is Jim's first baby so I doubt he'd really be closing the door completely, unless he quits music altogether. IT CAN'T BE THE LAST!!

Jim is far and away my favorite musician over the last decade or so. Quality product after quality product....

This album is on par with the last two albums. Which is a good thing.

Awaken The Guardian is a classic.

No Exit, Perfect Symmetry and APSOG are incredible because of experimentation.

FWX and Disconnected are terrific modern FW albums.

Inside Out’s song writing is great but the production and mixing is bad.

Parallels is arguably my favorite album of all time.

"Longest Shadow" is handily the best track here, chock-full of some of the tastiest prog metal i've heard this year. rest of the material here is great too. the runtime kinda stretches a bit longer than it should imo but, this being my first time with FW, i have an excellent first impression of them now. potential grower of an album

thanks for getting me on this, Omair

On repeated listens I'm both loving and disliking this more. I love Fates Warning, and these dudes deserve so much more attention, but for all the amazing songs on this there is way too much filler that drags it down.

Seriously, if you can just drop tracks 4, 5, 6, 8 and 13, and just let it end on 'The Longest Shadow of the day' (which is easily the best track) and the album suddenly feels more tight and unified.

I hate sounding harsh about this, but length for its own sake for a Fates Warning album was always a bad idea when this could easily have been one of their best records.

I know it sounds really weird, but somehow I became disappointed that I wasn't more disappointed. Maybe just because I'm a huge fan of this band and my expectations were far too high, especially after the excellent 'Darkness in a Different Light' and 'Theories of Flight' albums.

But you know what? Fair enough. I'm willing to accept that I need to listen to this a few more times to really appreciate it fully. In which case I'll retract my previous comments. Hell, I even confess Iron Maidens 'A Matter of Life and Death' album didn't resonate at first despite being one of their best modern albums in the end. For the moment, I'm still very mixed on this album but I'm open to being proven wrong on this.

As for 'The Way Home': I'm guessing my issue is that it felt like two or three distinct songs in one, first as a meditative and milky sounding tune but then changing its mind on a more janky and dark industrial sound halfway through. And I know that it's progressive metal and it can evolve into different tones, but the problem is that those parts don't feel like they "progress" as well as 'Still Remains' from the Disconnected album. Almost like the parts are too detached from one another to really gel.

As individual pieces, they're fine. But as a whole song it didn't quiet hit home for me. No pun intended.

It's not impossible, just improbable with how conflicted I am at the moment.

We'll see.

@Ikarus14 Some progressive songs can be very good, but the ideas they're based on maybe don't resonate with me. Most people loved the latest Haken, but to me it's just ''fine, I guess''. They album is probably great on its own, but to me it sounds half-baked. So probably it's the same with ''The Way Home'' for you. It just doesn't mean much to you the way it's built.

I don't wanna blame Willie, but I think his rating has a lot to do with the overall rating for the album, no pressure there buddy, just sayin.

So I listened to this a few more times today. I still have my doubts about 'The Way Home' but the other songs have grown on me. So what the hell, I'm bumping my rating up a little.

Yeah this is a grower (like all Fates albums). I think if you listen to it without judgement and unreasonable expectations you can find plenty of material to enjoy here

Holy shit this is up to #4 on trending
